We Need A Twist

Bayley has been a wonderful champion, and while I wouldn’t go as far to say that she’s the greatest SmackDown Women’s Champion ever like my colleague Mark Justice did (Becky Lynch is No. 1 in my book), she has been one of the brightest parts of the Blue Brand over the past several months.

In her second reign as champion and the only wrestler to hold the title since the Blue Brand moved to Friday nights on FOX, Bayley has been a commanding presence at the top of the card. But it’s time for Bayley to drop the title, since there’s a tendency for fans to sour when the same face is holding the title for nearly a year. It’s rare for wrestlers to be able to maintain their popularity over the duration of a title reign, and that’s not usually the fault of the wrestler; it’s the fault of creative running out of ideas.

Of course, in Bayley’s case, it might not be relevant since she’d transition into a killer feud with Sasha Banks no matter what. And if fans are annoyed by her still being champion, that works in the story’s favor. “Fatigued” would be the issue, but that doesn’t seem likely.

Still, title changes can be about excitement, moments, and headlines rather than so-called logical booking that we tend to overthink, as exemplified above, anyway.

And as far as generating excitement and headlines, few things at WrestleMania 36 could get people as hyped up as a Sasha title win.

The SmackDown Women’s Title needs a twist; it needs The Legit Boss to hold it for the first time in her career. So in addition to a WrestleMania moment, Sasha should set another career milestone by winning all three singles titles.
