WWE is planning to crown an interim WWE NXT Cruiserweight champion via a tournament in the coming weeks and these names stand out as potential entrants.

The coronavirus has impacted the professional wrestling industry, pushing it to a near standstill. The WWE is attempting to soldier forward in a world of uncertainty but has faced its own impacts from the virus. One such is Jordan Devlin, who is in Ireland and unable to travel to the United States.

The response has been for the WWE to announce a tournament to crown an interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion. While this is an unfortunate turn of events, one must wonder who will take the place as the title holder. With that in mind, here are five names that have been on television and could step in as a surprise tournament entrant.

Kushida

Kushida was a quiet signing when he joined the WWE in 2019. The organization was getting one of the best wrestlers in the world, regardless of weight class. Kushida has put on instant classics around the world as a member of New Japan and it was expected that he’d do the same as a part of the WWE.

Unfortunately, the promotion hasn’t jettisoned him to the top of the NXT roster, but he’s still reminded us that he’s excellent in the ring, with matches against the likes of Walter and Adam Cole as examples.

Kushida should be an immediate entrant to this event. He is a six-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, two-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team champions and winner of multiple junior heavyweight tournaments.

Kushida is built for tournaments like the one coming for the NXT Cruiserweight title. Plus, with WWE making it a point to put on longer matches to fill in content, Kushida would really get the opportunity to shine.
