AJ Styles and The Undertaker blew away WWE fans with their Boneyard Match at WrestleMania 36, but should they have an encore performance somewhere down the road?

Based on the build to WrestleMania 36, WWE fans were nervous about the Boneyard Match between AJ Styles and The Undertaker. When The Phenomenal One proposed the match stipulation, it seemed like ridiculous, made-up nonsense, and fans were worried that yet another Undertaker match was doomed to failure.

Instead, the two legends of the pro wrestling industry had an incredible cinematic match to cap off an entertaining first night of WrestleMania. But while Taker prevailed by “burying” The Phenomenal One after resurrecting himself when he seemed out of hope, there’s a chance the final chapter of their story is yet to be written.

Although Styles rightfully believes WWE should keep cinematic matches special by not doing too many of them, he also wants to have another.

Styles said this on his Mixer channel, via Comicbook.com’s Connor Casey:

"“It was a great match, I really enjoyed it. I hope I’m able to do it again. I don’t know, but it’d be nice.”"

Many interpreted this as Styles stating he wants to have another Boneyard Match with The Undertaker, though he could have also been talking about having another cinematic match in general.

Because if WWE were to have another match between Styles and Taker, it could not possibly be a second Boneyard Match, unless if significant changes were made to the format. In wrestling, as with most forms of entertainment, sequels are rarely better. They can be, but that’s usually if the callbacks are woven into something totally different.

The Undertaker putting over Styles as a way of paying it forward to The Phenomenal One for helping him look so good in the Boneyard Match could make sense, and, from a kayfabe standpoint, Styles’ character isn’t one to take a loss like THAT lightly. And there’s still the matter of, how does Styles return after such a transformative burial?

There’s the opportunity for a second cinematic match of a different stipulation and flavor between the two-time WWE Champion and The Dead Man (with a new gimmick). With enough time between the matches and the right mix of emotions stemming from their groundbreaking – by WWE’s standards – Boneyard Match, Styles and Taker could have a tremendous sequel.

Their match together at WrestleMania 36 is special, but there’s room to build on the Boneyard Match based on the storytelling arch of the brash, arrogant Styles realizing Taker is so much more than what meets the eye – among other layers. Knowing these two men as competitors and their knack for telling long-term stories, it would be exciting to see a rematch, as long as WWE wait a little before making a proper investment.
