WWE NXT: 5 wrestlers with massive breakout potential
2) Ilja Dragunov
Yes, I know, Dragunov is #1 contender for WALTER’s NXT UK Championship after winning a battle royal, but he isn’t champion yet now is he? He also may not have many viewers seeing him as he competes for the UK brand.
Still, I’m not sure who I’m more concerned for heading into a Dragunov match: his opponent or himself looking like he’s on the verge of a busting a capillary in his eye.
That pure adrenaline, intensity, and charisma is what makes Dragunov so unique and ladled with breakout potential. Those traits carry over with him in promos, and he is adept at knowing when to reign in the intensity and exuberance for the better.
Also, who doesn’t like a wrestler conducting their own entrance music on their way to the ring?
He looks like he absolutely crushes opponents with his stiff strikes. His lariat is brutal. You can also determine the intensity and path of the match based on how red Dragunov’s body becomes: the redder, the closer to the finish.
Jokes aside, he is quite nimble for a shorter, muscular wrestler. He can navigate the ropes well, going airborne when needed. His finisher is also another unique one in the Torpedo Moskau. He literally launches himself into his opponent head-first, which makes you wonder if even head injury can’t compete with the intensity that is Ilja Dragunov.
He’s had fantastic matches with Cesaro and Finn Balor, and should we return anytime soon to having UK matches, I expect an intense, hard-hitting match with WALTER. If he becomes champion, don’t be surprised if he makes more appearances in the US to prop up UK and showcase his star power.
