2. Prince Devitt v Kenny Omega – IWGP Jr Heavyweight Championship Match
There are some matches that people would call dream matches. However, for many unaware of the history of New Japan and its matches, they are probably unaware that one of them has actually happened. For many people, Kenny Omega and Finn Balor are two of the best wrestlers in the world and many could only dream to watch the two wrestle. Well, New Japan World has you covered!
Rewind to 2010 where New Japan’s IWGP Jr Heavyweight Champion was a young Prince Devitt who was not only one of the top Jr Heavyweights but was part of the amazingly talented Jr tag team Apollo 55 with the Funky Weapon Ryusuke Taguchi.
In Japan at the time, there was also a young Kenny Omega who was making his mark in the Japanese promotion Dramatic Dream Team (DDT). Both men were worlds away from either the first leader of the Bullet Club or the Demon in Devitt’s case and with Kenny, worlds away from the Cleaner or Best Bout Machine. However, we saw hints of the future within this match.
Although both were very different wrestlers, the talent was still undeniable even a decade ago. Both men were the true epitome of Jr Heavyweights throwing out moves as cleanly and crisply as any athlete.
So, with Taguchi in Devitt’s corner and Michael Nakazawa seconding Kenny Omega, we saw a match that set up not only the future of both New Japan and DDT but in the end, professional wrestling altogether. There was style, there was the motivation and there was a passion that made fans fall in love with both Kenny and Devitt.
For any Devitt and Omega fans, it’s a must-watch match and shows just how good they were back then and how much more they’ve grown since then!
