Roman Reigns is WWE’s top male star and has been at the top of the ladder for years, but he knows family and health are far more important than anything else in the world.

For months, WWE fans were under the understanding that Roman Reigns would win the Universal Title at WrestleMania 36, perhaps in the main event, from Bray Wyatt and then Goldberg.

But right before WrestleMania, Reigns made the honorable, important decision to step away from professional wrestling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, most fans, including myself, assumed that Reigns did this in part because he may be immunocompromised after recently battling leukemia. Hence why he had to relinquish the Universal Title in the first place.

However, Reigns clarified in a recent interview with TMZ Sports that his “immune system is good”, and he wouldn’t be at any additional risk of death or complications from COVID-19.

That said, he stepped away for a different reason that may be even more honorable and praiseworthy, since it involves protecting others. His recently-born twin sons, who are both eight weeks old, are on his mind. He’s not wrestling in order to protect them from harm.

"“It’s my family, it’s my children, they are my legacy. No matter what I do in this world, my children are gonna be the ones to represent my name and carry our name forward. So I had to make that choice for them, to protect them being so young.”"

Roman Reigns is an incredible person. He does so many Make-A-Wish opportunities and helps fans, especially young fans, and does so in ways that are not publicized. He handles undeserved hatred and animosity, which often include personal attacks, with astounding grace. Reigns is a locker room leader who is respected by all and has inspired so many fans around the world.

Although Reigns loves wrestling and opens up about how much he misses performing for the fans, there are absolutely bigger things than wrestling, such as the health and safety of individuals and those they love the most.

It’s too bad Vince McMahon, WWE, and other wrestling promotions (namely AEW and Impact Wrestling) can’t see past that. They may be doing their best to take precautions, but there are other wrestlers who are away from their families in order to avoid putting people at risk, such as Curt Hawkins before he was released, and they cannot take the same steps Reigns did out of fear of being released due to a lower position on the card.
