WWE Backlash: Could Edge vs. Orton really be the ‘greatest match ever?’

There have been great WWE matches, but Edge vs. Randy Orton at WWE Backlash 2020 will not be the greatest.

In fact, I’m not sure if there is a “greatest.”  To say this could possibly be the “greatest match ever,” as Charly Caruso blatantly said during last Monday’s closing segment on Raw, throws every other match in the background just to hype a Pay-Per-View that, like many events this year, is struggling to capture interest due to no fans and absent talent.

There is a way to hype the long-standing feud between Edge and Randy Orton, but this is not the way. They could build the match each week with just their great mic skills alone and that would be fine. But nothing they will do will make this “the greatest.”

The reason is because every wrestling fan can rattle off three feuds that were better and would be justified. More importantly, their list would be no better than the next fan because again, there have been better feuds and matches. Take my list for example:

  1. The Rock vs. Hogan (WrestleMania 18)
  2. Undertaker vs. Anyone
  3. The Rock vs. Stone Cold (Every variation of their feud )

The question remain: What could make this match the greatest?

Do we judge based off the build? Edge and Orton practically killed each other at WrestleMania 36 in a match that went longer than it really should have, but that’s just me.

Considering the history of Edge and Orton’s time in the WWE in singles competition and as the famed Rated RKO, do we count that? Or do we judge this feud solely as a new story? The story of how a man came back from a career-ending injury only to be turned on by his friend who felt he’s better off out the ring than in.

Are we looking at a good feud for 2020 or just another feud in the WWE that has gone on far enough between two men from the Attitude Era?

Now could this be the greatest wrestling match for 2020? Considering the lack of main event roster and no real pushes in the Mens Division other than Otis, it could be.  However, I, like many of you I’m sure are not sold on this being the greatest wrestling match ever.

That flies in the face of matches like Macho Man vs. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat at WMIII, or John Cena vs. CM Punk for the WWE Championship July 23, 2012 on MNR.  These are the essentials of wrestling.

These are the matches that are still talked about at Comic Cons and WWE promotional events. I don’t think this version of Edge vs. Orton can, nor will ever match those, but hype is hype I guess.
