With Night 2 of the NJPW New Japan Cup 2020 now at a close, we’ve seen the first wave of the left bracket trimmed down. The right bracket comes next week, but let’s recap what we’ve seen so far.

Night 1 of NJPW action gave us the first round of contestants moving on to the second phase of the left bracket next week: Makabe, Ishii, Yano, and Takahashi are all moving forward to the next step, along with the winners of last night’s matches.

Last night gave us more young lion action, more build-up for next week, and some funny moments that rounded out the entire show. Every match last night is worth watching.

Gabriel Kidd is, I believe, the first foreigner young lion to compete in the New Japan Cup, which may put a fire under him to bring the best version of himself to this competition, especially considering he’s not only competing against seasoned wrestlers, but against the other young lions as well.

While Ishimori maintains the upper hand throughout most of the match, but Kidd catches him off guard with some quick moves and an impressive dropkick. It’s clear that Kidd has a really promising future, especially in the style of New Japan wrestling, but he may have to go through a few more gauntlets first.

Kidd lost this one, but personally, I hope this isn’t his last openweight competition before his induction as an official part of the roster.
