Impact Wrestling is expected to reunite with a former world champion at Slammiversary 2020.

Ethan Carter III, EC3, was one of several wrestlers cruelly released by WWE during the COVID-19 pandemic, but his non-compete clause ends soon. That means he could be signing for a major promotion in July and appearing at one of their shows, just as we saw former WWE tag team The Revival show up in AEW as “FTR”.

EC3 has been teasing joining AEW, but he’s also been teasing signing with Impact Wrestling. The four-time 24/7 Champion in WWE was a lot more successful in Impact, as he was one of the promotion’s top stars. At Impact, the kayfabe nephew of Dixie Carter won two world titles, the Grand Championship, and several other honors along the way.

According to the Wrestling Observer News’ Dave Meltzer, via WrestlingNews.Co’s Andrew Ravens, EC3 is “widely expected” to make his return to Impact Wrestling at Slammiversary 2020, which takes place on July 18.

Impact has already announced a few big matches at Slammiversary, such as a No. 1 Contender’s Battle Royal for the Knockouts Division, a potential instant classic between Jordynne Grace and the newly-signed-from-WWE Deonna Purrazzo for the Knockouts Title, and a potential show-stealing X Division Title match between two of the company’s best wrestlers in Chris Bey and champion Willie Mack.

EC3 would add more firepower to the card as a surprise return, and there’s nothing better than making headlines at Slammiversary, especially at a time when Impact needs the extra set of attention that is actually positive and not manufactured through a kayfabed controversy.

AEW has signed a lot of former WWE stars, which is something they want to be careful not to do, since that’s something other promotions, including Impact Wrestling, have done in the past and paid the price for it.

But EC3 would be an ideal return for Impact. He is, after all, proven, and the Tuesday night promotion could really use him again.
