Sami Zayn was forced to relinquish the Intercontinental Championship, but he’s back on WWE SmackDown to prove he’s the only champion.

AJ Styles won the Intercontinental Title tournament earlier this summer to become the champion immediately after Sami Zayn was forced to give up the belt on WWE SmackDown. Jeff Hardy then won the title on the episode of SmackDown before SummerSlam and retained the title in his first defense against Shinsuke Nakamura on the Aug. 28 episode of SmackDown.

But Hardy’s title victory over Nakamura wasn’t the story around the title. Zayn made a surprising return at the Amway Center, taunting Hardy with his IC Title belt before attacking the current champion.

It’s awesome to see Zayn back. Zayn took a break from WWE due to COVID-19, and it was a wise decision considering how many people tested positive for the virus.

Sami Zayn vs. Jeff Hardy vs. AJ Styles a possibility

Roman Reigns made his return at SummerSlam to go after the Universal Title he never lost, and he’ll have a Triple Threat title match against Braun Strowman and the new champion Bray Wyatt. Now, Zayn should have a chance to win the IC Title belt he never lost, too, and perhaps that will also happen at Payback against Hardy and Styles, who appears to still be in the picture.

Hardy might be the favorite to win the match, considering he won the title recently before SummerSlam, but Zayn is the best man to hold the championship. WWE should never have stripped him of the title in the first place, and it was laughable to have them put in storyline that he didn’t defend the title for months and thus wasn’t the rightful champion.

Zayn will get a chance to prove that the new IC Title belt is his to hold this Fall, and despite being the heel, he could very well be the fan-favorite to win the match.
