At WWE Payback 2020, Seth Rollins and Murphy lost to Dominik and Rey Mysterio in tag team action after a communication error.

Although Seth Rollins’ heel stable on WWE Raw has undergone plenty of changes in 2020, Murphy has remained his loyal disciple. Against his own inner moral compass, Murphy even wrote Aleister Black off television, precipitating a heel turn for the former NXT Champion, by driving his eye into the steel steps.

But that loyalty has been tested after WWE Payback 2020. The previous week at SummerSlam, Rollins defeated Dominik Mysterio in the latter’s WWE debut, as the two put on a show in a hellacious Street Fight. That led to a tag team match at Payback between Rollins and Murphy and Dominik and Rey Mysterio.

It looked like the heels had the match won. Rollins ordered his disciple to kick Rey in the head, but instead of kicking Rey, Murphy kicked Rollins’ head off. That led to Rey and Dominik capitalizing, picking up the win. Afterward, Rollins sneered at Murphy, irately staring into the eyes of Murphy before walking off to the back.

That leaves us with plenty of questions heading into the Raw after Payback. Before Payback, WWE announced a singles match on Raw between Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio, which will main event the show. So something could be brewing…

Will Seth Rollins and Murphy break up as a team soon?

Fans have been speculating that Murphy and Rollins could be headed for a breakup sooner than expected. There’s always been the potential for a slow-burn rivalry between the two, as they are both two of the best athletes inside the ring on Monday Night Raw. A full rivalry between Rollins and Murphy could lead to a Match of the Year candidate on Pay Per View.

Seeds have been planted, perhaps most strongly at Payback when Murphy directly cost himself and Rollins the match by kicking the Monday Night Messiah in the head. Rollins won’t forget this misstep easily, and one more error from Murphy could lead to an angry outburst from the volatile, self-proclaimed locker room leader of Monday Night Raw.

The episode of Raw after Payback will be intriguing due to a number of storylines developed at the Pay Per View, and Rollins’ extended reaction to Murphy’s mistake on Sunday will be something worth keeping a close eye on, too. Rollins has been known to be quick to turn on members of his faction, though Murphy is his only true disciple.
