WWE SmackDown picked up many of the biggest names in the company during the draft despite having fewer picks, and it all makes sense.

Based on the number of high-octane stars WWE SmackDown picked up in this year’s draft despite having 1.5x fewer picks than Raw, I declared the Blue Brand the winners in the 2020 draft.

SmackDown kept Roman Reigns, Daniel Bryan, Sasha Banks, and Bayley. Three of those names are currently involved in the company’s two biggest feuds – by far. And from Raw, SmackDown added a future top star in Bianca Belair, as well as a couple of former Universal Champions in Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens.

According to a report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, via Cageside Seats’ Rumor Roundup, there’s a reason why SmackDown picked up so many big-name superstars this year.

Per Meltzer, the promotion’s “big priority” this year is to keep the ratings high on FOX this Fall. Therefore, they wanted their three major angles on the show.

WWE SmackDown has the company’s three biggest feuds right now

Roman vs. Jey Uso and Sasha vs. Bayley are obviously the two biggest. But it seems as if the third is the Seth Rollins, Mysterio Family, Murphy feud that we are all sick of. Thankfully, it seems like our reward may be Rollins vs. Bryan, based on what happened on the Oct. 16 episode of Friday Night SmackDown.

It makes a ton of sense for WWE to want to focus on maintaining ratings above two million on SmackDown. They need to keep FOX happy and keep growing on Friday nights. FOX seems willing to do whatever it takes to help out, given how many NFL commentators gave predictions for Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman and put over future stars like Bianca Belair.

There’s still work to be done, but SmakcDown has been WWE’s best show over the past few months. Hopefully, the strong draft means that the Blue Brand will continue to deliver a quality product every Friday night.
