Mercedes Martinez’s time with  WWE stable Retribution seems to have come to an end.

We have finally been given the reason why WWE NXT superstar Mercedes Martinez was pulled from Retribution.

According to the report by Fightful Select, it seems that Martinez made her intention to leave the stable clear before the group resigned their contracts in October of this year. She was then pulled from TV and several NXT talents were in the running to replace her within the faction before WWE executives and the creative team decided that the faction would be kept in their current form.

Prior to competing for the WWE, she had been a staple of American independent wrestling competing across the country from 2006 to 2020 and holding several titles across numerous promotions. The 39-year-old seemed happy with her status as an independent wrestler and, seemingly, had no aspirations to wrestle for a major company again ahead of her signing with the WWE.

Mercedes Martinez was also with the Robert Stone Brand in WWE NXT

Martinez initially signed with the WWE in January of this year after briefly appearing on All Elite Wrestling wrestling on All Out in the “Joker” position of the Women’s Casino Battle Royal. She also appeared on AEW Dark teaming with Big Swole in a losing effort against Allie and Sadie Gibbs. She also previously appeared on the first Mae Young Classic and advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament before being eliminated by Shayna Baszler.

Before joining Retribution she had a brief run with the Robert Stone Brand on NXT. Feuding with Rhea Ripley and Shotzi Blackheart. She was then removed from the faction after losing the second-ever women’s steel cage match in NXT history to Rhea Ripley.

It is expected that she will return to NXT soon and could be slotted into a feud with either of these ladies. Unfortunately for a woman of her stature a career in the WWE that is topped off by anything less than at least one lengthy Women’s Championship run will be seen as a waste.
