Leon Ruff keeps the NXT North American title

Three weeks ago, Leon Ruff won the NXT North American title. The excitement around his victory exploded across wrestling social media. However, it should be expected that Ruff will not go on a title run that some of his peers in Bayley and the New Day have reached. Ruff is not going to be a champion for an extended period, but that does not mean he needs to lose the title at NXT TakeOver: War Games.

Damian Priest and Johnny Gargano have both had their time in the spotlight with the NXT North American title. Yes, they are capable characters and competitors, but that has not helped their characters from growing stale in the mid-card. Having Ruff figure out a way to pin one of the two men to win the title, opens them up to other opportunities throughout the card.

For example, Priest would be an interesting addition to the main roster. He is already faced off against Balor before either man became champion, so there is no need to go back to that feud immediately. Gargano, another excellent performer that hasn’t had much time away from television, could use this as an opportunity to not be featured on NXT or even become the “second” to LeRae as she is poised to finally get the run atop the women’s division that she deserves. Either way, both Priest and Gargano should be leveraged in other ways that do not require them to win the title.

Ruff, on the other hand, should walk out of the PPV with the belt. Only to lose it in a moment of overconfidence to Cameron Grimes. It is time for WWE to establish some new heel champions and putting the belt on Grimes via Ruff is the way to go.
