WWE: Tyler Rust is a welcome addition to NXT
Tyler Rust’s introductory match on NXT against Tommaso Ciampa made it clear that he’s a new signee to watch.
Tyler Rust is one of the newest names to make his way down to the NXT ring and he had a strong performance in his match against former champion, Tommaso Ciampa. While it is always questionable to see WWE take the steps of having a prospect lose in such a match, Rust’s performance garnered a lot of praise and his post-match moment with Malcolm Bivens creates intrigue in what is next for this budding performer.
Rust and Ciampa put on a very solid match. Rust did not come off as an underdog in any fashion, controlling much of the match. Rust was sacrificed to further the angle between Timothy Thatcher and Ciampa, but there was enough shown in this match to draw interest in Rust as a single’s performer. Plus, he is going to be aligned with Malcolm Bivens. Bivens is considered one of the best talkers in the industry and it is about time he is brought back to television after what would have been a horrible debut with the pairing, he originally stood next to.
Rust may be new to WWE, but he is certainly not new to professional wrestling. With 16 years of experience under his belt, he is competed across many organizations that fans will recognize, including the NWA, PWG, and NJPW. Along the way, he has claimed several singles and tag titles during his run.
Rust’s introduction comes at a time when NXT is looking to retool its roster. Whether it was because of injury, a call-up to the main roster, or just overall stagnation – there is a need to make a shift in who is featured each week. Rust’s performance against Ciampa was all that was needed to show that he can perform with the best in the brand. Men like Bronson Reed, Dexter Lumis, Cameron Grimes, and others need foils as they continue to carve out their place on the roster. Rust can add his name to that short but growing list.
It is rare that there is any excitement around anything that comes out of WWE television. NXT continues to be the one bright spot where matches and the outcome of angles can be looked forward to. Tyler Rust’s performance against Tommaso Ciampa and his apparent “partnership” with Malcolm Bivens makes him another person to see each week on WWE NXT.
