WWE: Goldberg’s Promo Towards Drew McIntyre Did Not Make Sense

The stage has been set for Goldberg vs. Drew McIntyre at WWE’s Royal Rumble event in a few weeks. But there is something that I cannot get out of my head.

There is something that everyone forgot to mention about Goldberg’s return last week: his promo directed toward Drew McIntyre.

The stage has been set for Goldberg vs. Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble event in a few weeks. But there is something that I cannot get out of my head since Goldberg walked to the ring to challenge McIntyre. Everything that Goldberg said in the promo was pointed at the wrong target. The line that just made me roll my eyes, was “There couldn’t be a better representative to be the WWE Champion. You got size. You got speed. You got athleticism. But the one thing you don’t got is respect.”

Then came this line, which was the icing on the cake for me: “When you addressed these guys and girls, these legends up here, you look at them like a bunch of washed-up, tired old men and women. In your mind, you think that now in your prime, you are better than every one of them in their prime. You think that not one of them poses a threat to you whatsoever.” When you analyze the context of what Goldberg said, he should have aimed those words towards Randy Orton, NOT McIntyre. Did Goldberg watch the show at all? Did he not see Randy Orton threaten legends the entire night? Or, did Goldberg just happen to show up at the last two minutes of Raw?

Drew McIntyre had nothing to do with anything that Goldberg said. From a scripting standpoint, it made the entire promo laughable and it made me think “What in the world were they thinking scripting that dialogue?”. The supposed reason for this match even happening is because Vince McMahon feels that nobody is ready to go against Drew McIntyre. Couldn’t Goldberg vs. McIntyre be saved for the February major show? If that was the case, Goldberg vs. Orton should have taken place at Royal Rumble instead of what we have now. The promo Goldberg cut would have made more sense against Orton and not McIntyre.

Then, after that promo, Goldberg vs. Orton would have been a number one contender’s match for the WWE Championship at the February show and Drew McIntyre could have faced Sheamus or Keith Lee again, simple as that. But knowing WWE, everything had to be overbooked. If Goldberg would have just come out and challenged McIntyre for the WWE Championship and left out the incorrectly targeted dialogue about McIntyre disrespecting the legends, that would have been more believable and acceptable than what we got.
