Free agency is an important aspect of professional sports. While the WWE puts more emphasis in the “entertainment” or Sports Entertainment, the company still must deal with the potential of losing key members of the roster in contract negotiations. As WrestleMania draws near, news has broken that Cesaro’s contract is set to expire shortly after.

On Sunday, Wrestling Inc broke the exclusive news that Cesaro’s contract is set to end after the biggest WWE event of the year. As speculation grows around what is next for the performer, it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Cesaro is a valued member of the WWE roster. He is a multiple-time champion, with most of those reigns coming as a part of the tag team division. Still, he is at the top of nearly every list of wrestlers that the WWE has “under-utilized” and fans have long wanted to see the singles run that seems like it will never come.

That is the thought that will fuel the speculation around whether Cesaro will re-sign with the promotion or leave for one of the competitors in the industry. Even with COVID-19 having a continued impact on professional wrestling, organizations like Impact Wrestling, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and of course All Elite Wrestling are places where former WWE names have turned up for new opportunities. Some individuals like Deonna Purrazzo have benefited from leaving the WWE, immediately growing her brand in Impact. While others like Shawn Spears in AEW continues to look for his breakthrough moment.

The news of Cesaro’s contract ending after WrestleMania is one that will be closely watched as the months tick by. WWE has shown some tendency to hoard talent to keep them away from competitors. Will that same scenario play out with Cesaro? Time will tell, but here is to seeing more of the 40-year-old Swiss Superman.
