WWE: Road to WrestleMania kicked off the right way at Royal Rumble
Drew McIntyre vs Sheamus?
Something that WWE has seemed to build for months is a match between “best friends” Sheamus and WWE Champion, Drew McIntyre. The story itself has been interesting, as rarely does WWE pair a heel and face together cooperatively on screen.
The plot took the turn everyone had been waiting for on RAW this week when Sheamus finally turned on McIntyre. This is certainly setting up a match for a future pay-per-view, but I don’t think it’s at ‘Maina.

As we all know, Edge is not a full-time wrestler anymore. He’s in his late 40’s and has had a history of health issues, including spinal stenosis, which led to an 11-year retirement prior to Royal Rumble 2020. While he did have his first match on cable TV earlier this week, don’t expect this to be a regular occurrence.
This is where the Drew vs Sheamus feud fits in nicely.
It’s a completely natural storyline that can fill the void of Edge on the road to WrestleMania. As much as I’d like to see Sheamus make another run with the championship before he hangs up the boots, it’s unlikely it happens.
Drew retaining means himself and Edge can pick up where they left off closer to the granddaddy of them all on April 10-11. This allows Edge time away vs being on TV consistently over the coming months.
McIntyre heel turn?
I’m all for this.
Drew has done a fantastic job of carrying the company during unprecedented times. As many before him though, fans tend to get tired of the good guy winning all the time. We witnessed it in 2019 with Seth Rollins.
A heel turn by the Champion following a feud with Sheamus makes sense for many reasons.
- It keeps his character fresh
- He’s not going to get cheered over Edge
Drew turning on Edge would garner him a ton of heat. He’s also played the villain well in the past. I would argue he’s better as a bad guy than goody.
I’m not sure where WWE goes with Edge as champion, but you have to believe they have him go over at ‘Mania? The good guy finally winning the big one, or reclaiming the title at WrestleMania is a formula WWE has been following for decades.
It’s worked too.
Maybe Edge wins the title and retires? On top once again, but this time on his own terms? It has a great feel-good ring to it. Either way, I’m pumped for the road to WrestleMania 2021.
Welcome back fans!
