NXT tapings to take place every Tuesday in April following WrestleMania
According to PWInsider’s Mike Johnson (h/t to Fightful’s Jeremy Lambert for the transcription, subscription required to access the information directly from PWInsider), NXT plans to tape episodes of the brand’s weekly television show every Tuesday in April following WrestleMania 37.
This further fuels speculation that the show may move to Tuesday nights permanently — as reported by the Mat Men Pro Wrestling Podcast earlier this month — though WWE has not officially confirmed the move.
The tapings for those shows will start on April 13. There was no word as to whether the taped shows will air on Tuesdays or in the usual Wednesday time slot.
NXT has spent almost the entirety of its run on Wednesday nights.
Since moving away from the faux game show format (think the 2004 Tough Enough competition on SmackDown) in 2012, NXT has aired on Wednesdays, first on Hulu and Hulu Plus before moving to the WWE Network in 2014. Those episodes were also taped prior to airing, so NXT using this strategy for its April shows is far from a novel concept for the brand.
In an effort to compete against the upstart All Elite Wrestling (AEW) promotion and its flagship show, Dynamite, the show began airing live on the USA Network in September 2018 with an expanded two-hour format. However, the show has mostly struggled to eclipse Dynamite in total viewership and in the valued age 18-49 demographic.
Plus, the once celebrated NXT has earned some criticisms for its increased reliance on many of the same maligned booking strategies and tropes that Raw and SmackDown are known for. That said, most fans still view the program in a far better light than WWE’s main roster shows.
Before any of that happens, NXT still has two more weeks of shows to get through before the big two-night NXT TakeOver: Stand and Deliver event takes place. The first night will air in NXT’s usual spot on the USA Network with the second airing on pay-per-view, Peacock in the United States, and the WWE Network internationally.
