This may probably an unpopular opinion amongst the WWE Universe, but I wasn’t overly behind Drew McIntyre as WWE Champion.

Sure, his storyline of being the “Chosen One” 13 years in the making was compelling, circa WrestleMania 36 season. However, once he scored the title, and his reign progressed, I wasn’t all “rah-rah” for the “Scottish Psychopath”.

I have nothing against McIntyre. I think he’s a phenomenal athlete, who’s incredible in the ring, and he was a solid WWE Champion. But I think it’s time McIntyre takes a step back from another championship run and the title race picture, overall. It’s time for a change. It’s time to allow other wrestlers on the roster a chance to shine in the main event, wrestlers such as Bobby Lashley.

To keep this momentum, Bobby Lashley has to retain his WWE Title at WrestleMania 37.

Lashley as WWE Champion feels as if the company is headed in a new, fresh direction. There’s an element of excitement in the air when Lashley hits the ramp, and his new entrance theme is simply phenomenal.

Much like McIntyre, Lashley has a storyline centered around waiting for forever-and-a-day for a WWE Championship run. Much like Drew, fans have seen the potential in Lashley as a top WWE guy for a very long while. Much like McIntyre, sometimes it seems as if Lashley has received the short end of the stick over the years.

When Lashley returned to the company in 2018, there was electricity in the air on that Raw after WrestleMania 34. It seemed surreal to see him back with the company, and it was clear that the WWE Universe was happy to have him back. We wanted to see him do big things. In some ways, he did, and in other ways, WWE Creative dropped the ball, also. The three sisters segment still makes fans cringe, and while there have been some ups (Lashley turning heel, his Intercontinental and U.S. Championship runs), there have been plenty of lows as well (the Lana/Rusev angle).

So, now, Lashley is riding a high wave. The chemistry between him and MVP as his mouthpiece is flawless. He’s in incredible shape (some could say the best of his life), his character has been packaged up to perfection, and he exudes an aura of success. He’s accomplished something that he, as well as many within the WWE Universe, have wanted to see for a while now: he’s finally the top guy. He’s the holder of the holy grail in the company. He’s at the top of the ladder and the top of his game. Retaining his WWE championship is a must, come WrestleMania 37.

Drew’s already tasted gold. He had a lengthy and solid WWE title run. He even lost the championship last year and regained it almost instantaneously.

It’s time for a new chapter with the WWE Championship. It’s time for someone to explore other stories with the WWE title. It’s time to allow Bobby Lashley the spotlight he’s waited decades to be under. It’s time to explore what Lashley can do, as the WWE Champion, in a new season, post-WrestleMania 37.
