Is Humberto Carrillo a serious contender for the United States title? How?
By Amit Shukla
At one point, Humberto Carrillo impressed the WWE management enough to where he was allowed to face then-Universal Champion Seth Rollins in his Raw in-ring debut.
Carrillo received praise from superstars and fans alike, and it looked like WWE may have hit the jackpot with this new superstar on the roster. While it was all nice on paper, it didn’t turn out to be the same for the superstar, as he relegated to irrelevant storylines shortly thereafter. He made his mark and tried to feud with former WWE superstar Andrade, but to no avail, as the superstar didn’t get the deserved value on Monday Nights.
Is Huberto Carrillo a viable contender to Sheamus’ United States Championship?
It wasn’t long before Carrillo started his feud with Buddy Murphy as one of his favourites, Rey Mysterio, was injured by Murphy’s leader, Seth Rollins. The feud didn’t put him on the map, and it wasn’t long before he moved to WWE’s D-show, Main Event, where no one would get to see him on active television or on pay-per-views. It seemed like another superstar was grounded before he could take his place in the roster, but everything changed a few days ago when he made his return to the main roster (outside of literally chasing the 24/7 Championship).
The former 205 Live mainstay participated in the traditional Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal a day before the first night of WrestleMania 37 in a losing effort. He stepped up to the open challenge laid down by the current United States Champion Sheamus a few days later, and it seems like the superstar may finally have his breakthrough moment in the WWE.
Carrillo is not the same that we know from two years ago. He is energetic, ready to strike, and give the champion a run for his gold. If this is the new version of the superstar, then it’s a welcome change, and every member of the WWE Universe will accept it. He is focused and ready to power through obstacles and put on a performance that’s worth the audience’s time (it also helps to have Sheamus, who has been one of the company’s most consistent workers recently, to work with). It gives hope that we have a new star in the making and that Carrillo will prove to be a valuable asset to the roster.
We have seen superstars who are a little smaller in stature take a leap of faith and do the impossible. Rey Mysterio is a prime example of this, and if his story can teach anyone anything, then it’s that the never-say-die attitude and belief in himself can pay off. He rose from a midcarder to a consistent main eventer over the years, and if Carrillo gets the right push, then we may see history repeat itself.
Sheamus is helping his character, and if “The Celtic Warrior” can keep the fight going, we may see a new champion down the line. It would be a good thing, as the master of the Brogue Kick will kick a career to new heights and make the master of Missile Dropkick the newest superstar that will shine and take the championship to new heights.
