The Great American Bash is next week but there is still a lot to sort out before the WWE NXT special. The night came with one major bout booked, but by the end of the evening, an NXT North American title match was scheduled as the main event.

The first match of the night was a women’s tag team triple threat, with the winner getting a shot at the current NXT Women’s champions, The Way. Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart competed against Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai, plus the team of Zoey Stark and Io Shirai.

As usual, Gonzalez went to work with her power early, dominating all the opponents in the ring. Moon was the first woman to get any offense in against her, finally toppling the bigger woman with a head scissors. Blackheart was tagged into the ring and scored a two-count against the current champion, but that led to a brawl with all six women.

Stark was isolated in the ring for a moment until Shirai was able to save her. The action continued until Gonzalez slowed things down by keeping Blackheart in the corner. She then did the same to Shirai, dropping her multiple times to the mat. Stark got the tag into the match and began to work on both Gonzalez and Kai. She attempted to pin Kai multiple times but could only secure a two count. Shotzi locked in a submission on Kai, but Gonzalez made the save.

The finish came after all five of the women attempted a Tower of Doom spot, only to be broken up by Gonzalez. After tossing all the women aside, each went on their own offensive spree, hitting their textbook maneuvers. The end came when Shirai landed a stiff palm strike to Kai’s face, finishing her off with the Moon over Moonsault to get the victory.

Io Shirai and Zoey Stark win via pinfall to become the new number one contenders to The Way.

Diamond Mine were out next with Roderick Strong ready to represent the group in singles action. His opponent was Asher Hale.

Strong went right after Hale, grounding the younger athlete. Even when Hale attempted to use his own grappling, Strong was prepared to counter the positions, including ramming Hale’s face into the top turnbuckle, before landing a big back breaker. From that moment, Strong was firmly in control. After taking a back elbow, Hale tried to fight back but took a jumping knee for his trouble. Strong finished him off with a combination submission to get the victory.

Cameron Grimes was out next for singles action against Ari Sterling.

Grimes was in control early, even bouncing back from a stiff kick to the face to answer with a Hurricanrana. However, that did not stop Sterling from putting on some offense of his own that caught the attention of the viewers. He pinned Grimes after a twisting senton, but only earned a two count.

Sterling was rolling for a moment, staggering Grimes with a kick and then following up with more offense in the corner. He went for a flipping maneuver off the top but missed, giving Grimes the space to hit the Cave In and picking up the win.

Mixed tag team action was next as Boa and Xia Li competed against Jake Atlas and Mercedes Martinez.

The match started with all four members brawling, leaving Atlas and Boa in together. Atlas was rolling early, attempting to pin Boa who kicked out at one. He tagged in Li who brought in Martinez, only to immediately get dropped with a kick to the face.

Boa and Li continued to roll in this match. Atlas fought back, tossing Boa from the ring, and bringing Martinez back inside. She knocked Li down with multiple clotheslines, and even hit a double-underhook suplex from the top rope. Martinez turned her focus to Ling on the stage, but Li took advantage. She is landing a spinning kick to Martinez’s face and nearly pinned her at that moment. Martinez kicked out but the match was stopped due to the referee calling for the bell.

Bronson Reed and Isiah “Swerve” Scott were booked in a match for the main event. The NXT North American title was on the line.

Scott had the positional advantage early, but Reed eventually took control with his power. Reed had Scott grounded and Scott tried a Triangle Choke, but that did not work out for him. Neither did trying to leapfrog Reed, who launched him backwards. Scott tried to fight back but ate a headbutt for his troubles.

Scott started going after Reed’s legs to find success, but after a sunset flip attempt to the outside, Reed dropped his weight and sat on the smaller man. But still, the smaller man was still able to get off his own offense. That was until he ate a Death Valley Driver from Reed, planting him in the center of the ring. Reed was rolling until Hit Row tried to get involved in the match, but they were not able to help as both Top Dolla and Adonis ended up being launched over the barricade.

However, Scott took advantage of the moment, laying Reed out as he climbed back into the ring. He landed a 450 Splash on Reed and pinned him, becoming the new NXT North American champion.
