You can’t talk about 2006 WWE without talking about the most prominent feud from that year: John Cena vs. Edge.

What started with a shocking Money in the Bank cash-in (which WWE has run into the ground in the decade and a half since) evolved into a rivalry that spanned parts of 10 months and included 11(!) televised singles matches, not to mention plenty of memorable moments (Edge slapping Cena’s dad, Cena tossing Edge into the Long Island Sound).

That said, the two haven’t wrestled each other since 2010 — they teamed together during some house shows in 2011 — so would the interest be there for another encounter at WrestleMania?

If you ask Edge, he hasn’t completely shut the door on that possibility.

Edge talks about possibly facing John Cena again.

Appearing on The Kurt Angle Show, Edge discussed his interest in facing Cena at “The Grandest Stage of them All” while reflecting on his battles with “The Face That Runs The Place” (h/t to Fightful’s Robert DeFelice for the transcription):

"“When I got to John, and we kind of got on the same page and he realized what I was out to do, which was just that, to make him Superman. Once we both had that understanding. Then, we were off and running, because I don’t think that program was supposed to last more than three weeks. After WrestleMania 22, [where] I got to work Mick [Foley], who is another guy that just did so much for my career.“Then they’d circle back to John and I, because I think it worked so good in that three weeks and ratings went up, and all those things, you know, the website hits and everything went through the roof. So it was like, go back to that. Then once they went back to us, I think we ran for like a year and a half after that. Then they rebooted again, and they rebooted again, and we’d ended up on SmackDown and be rebooted. It kept going and going. The only thing was with John and I, we never wrestled a one-on-one at WrestleMania. Which is crazy, right? We worked everything else, but.“I’m back. The scent is in the air. You never know, it could happen one day.”"

As of July 22, Edge and Cena are set to take part in major stories that will primarily play out on SmackDown. Following his loss to Roman Reigns at Money in the Bank, Edge seems set to feud with Seth Rollins, who interfered twice in the Edge/Reigns match to prevent Edge from winning the Universal Championship.

Cena, who returned right after the Edge/Reigns match concluded, will Reigns’ next challenger for the Universal Title, likely at SummerSlam.

As for ‘Mania, Cena and Edge have faced each other at WWE’s biggest show, but not in a one-on-one capacity; they participated in a triple threat match that included The Big Show at WrestleMania 25.

Should they have this match at all, let alone at ‘Mania

Revisiting this feud after more than a decade would be another sign of WWE going all-in on the part-timers (at the expense of the full-time roster). There’s also little reason for them to have a match at ‘Mania outside of naked nostalgia (which WWE has a whole network for) and the note about them not having a singles match at that Pay-Per-View.

The Rock Scheduled To Be At Survivor Series. dark. Next

In a vacuum, it would be a harmless bout situated in the semi-main event, but there are far too many interesting opponents for both men to go back to this.
