If you asked fans to pinpoint WWE SmackDown’s creative peak, most would direct you to 2002. During that time, WWE’s secondary television show had plenty of things going for it: an entertaining cruiserweight division, an upstart WWE Champion in Brock Lesnar, and, of course, the famed “SmackDown Six”, which featured Hall of Famer Edge.

The sublime sextet — comprised of Edge, Rey Mysterio, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, and Chavo Guerrero — produced a significant percentage of the quality workrate the show became known for. It was their efforts that helped make SmackDown a refreshing alternative to “The Triple H Show”, better known as Raw.

Unsurprisingly, Edge holds this period of SmackDown in the same esteem.

Edge reflects on the “SmackDown Six”.

On The Kurt Angle Show, Edge reminisced over this era of SmackDown (h/t to Fightful’s Robert DeFelice for the transcription):

"“When we started that idea of the SmackDown Tag Titles, I knew with those six, with those six talents — and I’m sure Paul thought this as well, ‘I can mix and match every week.’ No matter what mix or match it is, they’re gonna crush it. Whether it’s Eddie and Edge one week, and Benoit and Rey, or [Kurt Angle] and Chavo, and then flip them the next week, and then flip them again. I mean, there are so many scenarios, you can go with that to me that, again, so much fun.“I think back to No Mercy [2002] and that tag match we had for the inaugural tournament, and it was [Kurt] and Chris against me and Rey, and it was just to be in there with three other guys like that and just performing at that level, you know, you can’t really explain it. It’s hard to put into words when stuff like that is just bam, bam, bam, and it’s exactly how you envisioned it and then some.”"

These six also helped establish the credibility of the WWE Tag Team Championships with classic matches at No Mercy 2002 and Survivor Series 2002. Each man would go on to win at least one world championship in the years following this run.

As for Edge, he is currently on SmackDown feuding with Seth Rollins. The two will likely wrestle each other at SummerSlam.
