In the world of professional wrestling, there have been many match stipulations that have a history of violence, such as Hell in a Cell and Elimination Chamber. Many of them came to exist because was one match that took years off of many wrestlers, and that match is War Games.

War Games is a Dusty Rhodes creation inspired by the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. There have been countless War Games-style matches over the years, but when it comes to the match, WCW and WWE are the companies that fans think of when they think of the match. The War Games match has a long history dating back to the NWA, but in this article, I will be discussing the top five greatest War Games matches in WCW and NXT history.

5. 2020 War Games (NXT)

The Undisputed Era had been in every single men’s  War Games since NXT had revived the match. The Undisputed Era was NXT modern-day Four Horseman stable, and they proved that each time they got into the ring. In their final appearance in the War Games match, they would enter as the babyfaces and would take on Pat McAfee and his heel stable. The fans were behind the Undisputed Era the whole match because they wanted UE to get revenge after weeks of being beaten down by Pat McAfee and his heel stable. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see Undisputed Era as babyfaces longer than we did because they were great as babyfaces. The Undisputed Era won the match, and it delivered from start to finish.

4. 2019 WarGames (NXT)

In 2019, the NXT women put together a classic War Games match that is still discussed today. The two teams featured some of the most talented women wrestlers on the WWE NXT roster back then. The teams would be led by Rhea Ripley and Shayna Baszler. The talent put together a fantastic match that showed the world that NXT had the best women’s division in wrestling at that time. The match had an exciting finish with Dakota Kai turning heel and Rhea Ripley becoming a massive star for NXT.

3. 1991 WarGames ( WCW)

The Four Horse were the kings of the War Games matches in the early stages of WCW, much like the Undisputed Era was in NXT. This War Games match would feature The Horseman against Sting, Brian Pillman, and the Steiner Brothers. The Horseman would win the match when Sid Vicious would powerbomb Brian Pillman twice, injuring his neck and bringing out a friend El Gigante to throw in the towel. The ending of this match was one of the best finishes to a War Games match.

2. 1992 WarGames (WCW)

The War Games 1992 match is described by many as one of the greatest cage matches in professional wrestling history. The 1992 match would feature Sting’s squadron Versus the Dangerous alliance. The match would occur at wrestle war 1992, and Sting would lead a team consisting of Nikita Koloff, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, Barry Windham against Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton, Steve Austin, Larry Zbyszko, and Rick Rude. This was a match that featured many future Hall of Fame wrestlers. This match was one of the greatest matches that WCW put together and should be remembered as one that separated WCW from WWE in the early stages.

1. 2017 WarGames (NXT)

The first NXT Wargames was a unique version of the match because it would feature three different teams. The Undisputed ERA would battle Sanity and the team of The Authors of Pain and Roderick Strong. The three-team format is something that NXT should bring back because it allowed more wrestlers to prove to the wrestling fans that their team belonged in the match.

The Undisputed Era pinning Eric Young to win the match was the perfect choice because it allowed the story between the two factions to evolve in front of our eyes. WWE’s re-introduction of WarGames in NXT was the best version of the match because it introduced new wrestling fans to a match they had only seen on the WWE network.
