WWE returning to UK for the first major stadium event in 30 years
WWE has announced that they will be having their “first major stadium event to be held in the UK in more than 30 years” when they go to Cardiff, Wales. The show is scheduled for September 3, 2022 at Principality Stadium, home of the Wales national rugby union team.
According to the press release, WWE’s Senior Vice President, Live Events, John Porco, stated “The weekend will be filled with a variety of WWE experiences that we believe will leave a lasting memory, on par with SummerSlam at Wembley Stadium in 1992.”
In 1992, SummerSlam was held at Wembley Stadium in London, England. WWE has held frequent European tours, but has not held a pay-per-view (or premium live event) in the UK since then. That SummerSlam had a double main event: Ultimate Warrior vs. “Macho Man” Randy Savage for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship and “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith vs. Bret Hart for the WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship.
The Welsh Government Minister of Economy Vaughan Gething said of the event: “Wales will provide an iconic location for WWE’s return to the UK after 30 years and showcase our country to a global audience of millions, including extended reach in the USA. This is set to be the perfect addition to a huge year of sport, entertainment, and culture in Wales that will attract people from across the globe to experience what our country has to offer.”
The stadium can hold 73,931 fans. Principality Stadium Manager, Mark Williams said, “Principality Stadium is unique in its position at the heart of the city centre, which will undoubtedly offer WWE fans an unrivaled event experience both inside and outside of the stadium and bring great benefit to the wider city of Cardiff.”
As of now, there is no word on the show’s name or when tickets will go on sale. The event will be airing over Labor Day weekend in the US and will go head-to-head with AEW’s biggest pay-per-view, ALL OUT.
