3 potential challengers for unified tag team champs The Usos

Thanks to their win over RK-Bro on the May 20 episode of WWE SmackDown, the Usos now hold the Raw and SmackDown Tag Team Championships. Following in their cousin, unified WWE and Universal Champion Roman Reigns’, footsteps, Jimmy and Jey Uso have now added a bit more credibility to their team and the Bloodline as a whole.

Plus, unifying the tag titles allows them to freshen up their material and it gives them a wider range of potential opponents on both shows. But who should those challengers be? Well, that’s what we’re here to discuss today.

These are three potential opponents for unified tag team champions The Usos.

The Street Profits

Since losing the SmackDown Tag Team Titles in January 2021, The Street Profits have basically settled in as a middle-of-the-pack duo while other teams got their shot. Recently, though, the two were teasing a heel turn while chasing Randy Orton and Riddle for the Raw tag belts, but now that both belts are back on a heel team (and while Riddle rumored to be Roman Reigns’ next opponent), it looks like the Profits will continue to wear the white hats and pursue The Usos.

The Usos and the Profits did face off several times for the SmackDown Tag Titles last fall, but thanks to a draft-imposed separation, WWE can now revisit that feud without it feeling too stale. Besides, these teams have great chemistry, so as long as WWE doesn’t bun fans out on it with endless rematches (a big if), this could be a lot of fun.

The Alpha Academy

Yes, Chad Gable and Otis are currently heels, with the lack of babyface challengers and high entertainment level both have exhibited over the last few months, it wouldn’t shock anyone if WWE turned them in the near future.

WWE wouldn’t even need to work that hard to turn them; scripting something as simple as Gable and Otis calling out Kevin Owens for his pointless crusade against Ezekiel would more than suffice as a viable shift to the light side. Plus, Otis — despite improving as Gable’s blunt instrument sidekick — is far better as a babyface, so a turn would be much appreciated from that perspective.

It wouldn’t take much to sell fans on the match quality, either. We all know how great Jimmy and Jey are as a unit. We also know how technically proficient Gable is. And while Otis is the weakest worker of the four, he’s much improved as a powerhouse and would have a blast running through both Usos during a hot tag spot.

Plus, it’s a fresh matchup that could foster some fun segments during the build.

The New Day

Look whether or not you believe that The Usos and The New Day had wrestled each other far too many times, we know that WWE won’t be able to resist booking the two teams they have rightfully put on a pedestal in a program over for the newly-consolidated championships. Given their respective standing in WWE, having them fight over the unified belts actually makes the most sense.

However, it also makes the promotion’s inability to keep these guys away from each other all the more frustrating because all those prior matchups have diluted plenty (though not all) of fans’ interest in seeing them wrestle. After all, there are only so many different ways to innovate on a match we’ve seen dozens of times.

That said, we know that the verbal exchanges and the matches will be great, especially if they plant seeds for a returning Big E eventually going after Roman Reigns. Additionally, their robust history affords them plenty of backstory to reference and relitigate to build anticipation for a new batch of bangers.

That said, maybe hold off on this one for at least a year?
