Now is the time to rebuild the SmackDown women’s roster
The opening of SummerSlam set the stage for a new era for the Monday Night Raw women’s division. The returning Bayley, flanked by Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky caught the attention of the wrestling world. That same night featured Liv Morgan defended her title against Ronda Rousey in a finish that was understandable but controversial. The stage is set for an improvement in women’s wrestling on the main roster, and it’s imperative that Triple H takes the steps to rebuild the SmackDown women’s division.
The first step is building Morgan as a captivating and competent women’s champion. Raw has Bianca Belair and fans continue to flock to the EST of WWE. The groans were plentiful and loud with how the outcome of the match with Rousey went, but they can book themselves out of the difficulty in how Rousey has been booked over the rest of the women on the roster. Regardless of how they get there, Morgan must go over Rousey in the end.
Then, the next step is to shine a light on the rest of the talented women in this group. Just like Alexa Bliss and Asuka are poised to get more time on Raw, SmackDown’s roster needs the same. Fans want to see more from names like Xia Li, Shayna Baszler, Aliyah, and Shotzi. Doing so builds a stream of angles outside the title picture while setting the stage for future challenges.
And one cannot forget about the two giants in the room, Sasha Banks and Naomi. Rumors are swirling about overtures made to soothe things over with the two former champions and while there’s no update on if or when they will return, focusing all resources to make that happen would be a massive boost to this roster.
There’s even an opportunity to look toward WWE NXT for a new crop of contenders. Mandy Rose and Toxic Attraction are poised to turn heads, for better or worse, when they reach the main roster and they would be interesting foils to Morgan. Or what about Elektra Lopez as a part of Legado del Fantasma, Kayden Carter, or Kay Lee Ray? There’s an opportunity to pick some key women from NXT and further strengthen this part of the SmackDown roster.
Triple H took over the reins from the crestfallen Vince McMahon and the impact on the main roster was felt days later. The work is far from over. He’s shown an early commitment to the women on Monday Night Raw and it’s time to do the same by building a solid roster around Liv Morgan on WWE SmackDown.
