WWE must put together a well-received Royal Rumble to build momentum
WWE is heading into an important time, both inside and outside the ring. The news about Vince McMahon’s return has caused a lot of concern, and it rightfully should. The promotion is kicking off a crucial run into WrestleMania season, as Triple H’s creative vision needs some momentum. While many are focused on the developments outside the ring, the 2023 edition of The Royal Rumble has a vital place in the immediate future for the promotion and Triple H must deliver an exciting show that sets the stage for WrestleMania season.
The 2022 edition of the Royal Rumble is a prime example of what happens when that show does not deliver. Ronda Rousey’s return and Brock Lesnar’s “surprise” entrance were met with collective groans. The Rumble is a moment that is meant to elevate a new star into the main event scene, but fans were once again treated to Rousey and Lesnar at the top of the card – creating predictable scenarios heading into WrestleMania.
2023 is in a different place. Roman Reigns remains the dominant champion, but it seems like there are rumblings that it’s time to see him drop one of those titles. But to who? Cody Rhodes stands out as an option, but he’s not the only one as a big push is growing for Sami Zayn to be the one to get that big moment. WWE could also go back to their “ace” in Seth Rollins. Plus, there is speculation that individuals like Bron Breakker or Carmelo Hayes could make a run in the Rumble as well. There’s a lot of intrigue to see who is given the proverbial rocket in 2023.
The same is true in the women’s division. Rhea Ripley stands out as a top favorite to win the Rumble. But who does she go after? With Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair as champions, Ripley has beef with either lady. Regardless of who she picks, there’s a huge void of contenders that could face the other champion heading into WrestleMania season. Expect a big return for the Rumble (Naomi?) that could create a lot of buzz. The women’s Rumble is also wide open and there’s a lot that could go down.
The 2023 Royal Rumble needs to be seen as a jumping-off point for the promotion in the new year. There’s a lot of concern that the situation with McMahon is going to sink the goodwill that Triple H’s revamped content has created. Booking a subpar Royal Rumble would only worsen that situation. It is imperative that the company puts on a well-booked show that sees important developments in both matches that build toward a strong WrestleMania 39.
