Last summer, Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out of the WWE and left women’s tag team wrestling with no avenue back to relevancy. Once it was announced the belts would come back as vacant, Triple H booked an eight-team tournament in August and September of 2022 to try to reestablish the belts, but it fell well short of the goal.

The last time Dakota Kai and IYO SKY of Damage CTRL defended the WWE women’s tag team championships on television was on Dec. 16, 2022.

Nearly two months later, the division is left without any other team to challenge for the belts.

The division needs a major change to become a part of the WWE product again. Below are some ways WWE creative could attempt to revive the wasteland that is currently the women’s tag division.

Number 1: Unify the NXT and WWE women’s tag team belts

The WWE Women’s belts are allowed to be defended across all brands and it makes no sense to not have the main roster belts defended in NXT as well. Fallon Henley and Kiana James should take on Dakota Kai and IYO SKY in a match to merge the belts at Wrestlemania. NXT has one of the strongest female talent divisions in the company, and using teams of talent from the developmental brand is a great way to fill a division quickly and build up the champs with more wins. Unifying the belts also adds the advantage of exposing developmental talent to main roster fans, boosting the cohesiveness of shows on WWE television.

Number 2: Make an annual Wrestlemania battle royal for the belts

Having an annual battle royal requires WWE to make sure they have enough teams to fill a battle royal every year annually at the biggest show of the year. This year is a great opportunity to start that tradition. The history of the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal is a great example of a yearly contest that can be used to boost superstars’ stock.

If WWE places a hall of fame inductees name on the battle royal, such as Beth Phoenix or Torrie Wilson who were inducted into the hall of fame in 2017 and 2019 respectively, it would add prestige to the match and the belts. The main point of this match is to make sure in late March and early April each year WWE does not just throw together singles superstars into teams and must book real teams to compete in the over-the-top-rope elimination match.

Number 3: Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler become fighting champions

There is no better physical fighter pairing in the WWE than Baszler and Rousey. Rousey has all the star power needed to grow the division back with massive heel heat. Rousey is not liked as a top champion by many WWE fans as she cannot cut a good promo and needs more in-ring training, but with Baszler talking for her and being in the ring for half the time, Rousey’s performances may be enjoyable. Rousey and Baszler could become top heels on Smackdown and defend the belts across all the brands at least once a week whether on Raw, Smackdown, or NXT.

If it is one of the three solutions listed above, or another idea WWE creative comes up with, the women’s tag division needs some major help to avoid only having one title defense in two months ever again.
