Bill Goldberg is on the road to retirement and it looks like that path may take him directly through former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther. Fightful Select reported the potential match on Thursday, May 8 and it looks like this could go down at some point in 2025.
"Those familiar with the situation confirmed to Fightful that Goldberg vs Gunther has absolutely been discussed for this year and is on the table," Fightful reported. "We haven't heard specifics on the match, outside of that it has been broached and is considered a possibility."
Gunther versus Goldberg would be a proper sendoff
Gunther and Bill Goldberg had their initial interaction started back in 2024 when Gunther took shots at Goldberg during WWE Bad Blood. After Triple H introduced the WWE Crown Jewel Championship, Gunther took some time to denigrate the crowd, specifically Goldberg. Goldberg jumped the barricade, but the two men did not get physical.
Currently, Gunther is wrapped up in an angle with Pat McAfee. The two will battle at WWE Backlash on May 10. It's an angle that most suspect is set to open the door for Gunther versus Goldberg. This is an acceptable way to kep Gunther out of the title picture for a while, perhaps until the WWE Draft so he can be moved to SmackDown, while giving Goldberg the retirement moment he believes he deserves.
Goldberg is a multiple-time champion and one of the biggest names from the days of WWF versus WCW. He went on an iconic undefeated streak while in WCW, and was one of the performers who held out from making an appearance in WWE when it purchased WCW. However, he'd eventually make that move which would translate into three championship runs. He was last seen in a WWE ring when he was defeated by Roman Reigns at WWE Elimination Chamber 2022.
