It’s the Monday after Elimination Chamber, and fans are still reeling after John Cena’s actions. In one of the most shocking moments in recent wrestling history, Cena attacked Cody Rhodes, aligning himself with The Rock. This moment should look quite familiar because it’s happened in the past. This is Cena giving Rhodes his position as the biggest name in the business.

This has happened before in professional wrestling and sports entertainment. Andre the Giant transferred his position to Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 3. Hulk Hogan gave it up to The Rock at WrestleMania 18. The Rock did it for John Cena at WrestleMania 29. Now, Cena is in a position to do the same for Rhodes. But this moment looks quite different in how things will play out.

In each of those prior examples, the younger performer took the victory. They stood tall as the prior generation faded into the background. Cena is undoubtedly the “prior generation” in this conversation, but do not be surprised if he takes the victory over Rhodes at WrestleMania 41.

John Cena’s retirement run will include one more title reign

At first glance, it makes sense why Cena would align with The Rock. Cena is 47 years old. He’s continued to question himself. Question his abilities. His victory at Elimination Chamber was his first big win in years. Perhaps he knew that if he was going to get that coveted 17th title reign, he had to do some things differently. Differently, it means aligning himself with the most powerful figure in the WWE.

Fans have long wanted to see Cena turn heel. In the past, it didn’t make sense for business as Cena’s name was the most important in the company, and perhaps all professional wrestling. He moved merchandise and set records with the Make a Wish Foundation. Turning Cena heel years ago did not make sense for business, but that was then and this is 2025.

Cody Rhodes is now the one moving merchandise. He’s the one putting butts in seats. He’s the one showing up week after week, carrying the flag of WWE. There’s no telling if he’s doing numbers similar to Cena during his prime, but he’s doing bigger numbers than anyone else on the roster. Having Cena transfer his position over to Rhodes in a massive angle only makes sense and the timing couldn’t be better.

John Cena versus Cody Rhodes is the type of story that should stretch throughout the rest of the year. Things started at Elimination Chamber and should end at a special event in December. Expect a lot of winding promos and twists along the way, but this will be a fun ride. It will be remembered for years to come.
