Endeavor’s ownership of WWE and UFC creates some interesting possibilities for crossover in the future. However, WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria sent shots toward one major name on the UFC roster, former champion, Conor McGregor.
“He doesn’t have what it takes,” Valkyria said to Jack Duignan in reference to the idea that McGregor could step into the WWE ring. That’s a simple, but strong statement toward one of the most popular names in combat sports today.
It has been nearly four years since McGregor has stepped into the Octagon. His last match took place at UFC 264 where he was stopped via TKO doctor stoppage in his trilogy battle against Dustin Poirier. It has been more than five years since McGregor won a fight, last defeating Donald Cerrone back at UFC 246 on January 18, 2020.
McGregor was the first fighter to hold two titles across two divisions in UFC history when he became both the Lightweight and Featherweight Champion nearly a decade ago. Since then, he’s stepped into the world of boxing, losing a one-sided contest to Floyd Mayweather. His accolades in the cage are now playing second fiddle to his serious issues outside the ring, including multiple allegations of sexual assault.
As Endeavor pushes WWE even further into the space of chasing mainstream attention, it would not be shocking if McGregor showed up in some fashion. Other UFC fighters like Michael Chandler and Leon Edwards have shown up in the crowd at major WWE events, do not be surprised if McGregor did the same if and when WWE takes another trip back over to Europe. As of this writing, he’s only 36 years old, so he’s still young from a sports standpoint.
Lyra Valkyria is riding a wave of important momentum
Lyra Valkyria is coming off a big win of her own against Becky Lynch at WWE Backlash. Lynch cost Valkyria a shot at being involved in the upcoming Money in the Bank ladder match, so expect that feud to continue.
It will be interesting if Lynch responds to Valkyria’s comments on McGregor. All three performers are from Dublin, Ireland and Lynch has openly praised McGregor in the past. If WWE wants to get some big eyes on this feud and center it as a top angle in the company, getting McGregor involved would be quite a twist.
