Powerhouse Hobbs must get a sustained push at the top
The January 8 edition of AEW Dynamite featured the Casino Gauntlet Battle Royale and there was a surprise in store when Powerhouse Hobbs picked up the victory. Hobbs is one of those AEW names that fans have long wanted to see get a push into the main event. Well, that’s coming and there’s hope it will be a sustained run near the top of the company.
All Elite Wrestling has a roster packed with young talent ready to be the superstars of the future. Hobbs may not have come in with the hype of someone like MJF or Daniel Garcia, but he’s carved out a space for himself that has led to some success. He held the AEW TNT Championship for 42 days in 2023, and while that reign left a lot to the imagination, it was a sparkling of hope that it could lead to something bigger.
Is Hobbs going to defeat Jon Moxley? Absolutely not. But this is an opening for AEW to book Hobbs in a strong fashion, even in defeat. If he is shown fighting back the Death Riders and it taking the full might of all four members to put him away, then there’s something to take from that which can be built into momentum for Hobbs. He’s coming off a defeat to Konosuke Takeshita, and losing too many title matches can have a long-term effect. Hobbs isn’t going to capture the AEW World Championship at this moment, but it is one that can lead to something big in the future.
Hobbs is 33 years old, and it would be interesting to see what AEW would do with him as a central figure in week-to-week booking. Imagine slotting Hobbs against Bobby Lashley and The Hurt Syndicate in a long-term angle. Or booking him to get a rematch against Takeshita and taking the International Championship. Hobbs fans should be well aware that he’s not taking the championship from Moxley, but that doesn’t mean they should accept him going back to obscurity after this moment.
Powerhouse Hobbs has long been a name to watch on the AEW roster. Seeing him win the Casino Gauntlet Battle Royal was a major surprise and hopefully one that leads to a sustained push.
