WWE Smackdown! – Christmas Night

Merry Christmas to all!  The WWE doesn’t take a day off this holiday and gives to you the gift of Friday Night Smackdown on Christmas!  Well it was taped on Tuesday, but it’s the thought that counts!  Here’s what happened:

Backstage: Vickie Guerrero and Teddy Long are “hosting” a Christmas cooking type segment where they talk about all the wonderful food consumed on Christmas.  Unfortunately for them, the segment ends in chaos as Hornswoggle makes an appearance and starts eating the turkey!

Finlay, R-Truth, Matt Hardy & John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Luke Gallows & CM Punk
WINNERS: Faces via pin fall after John Morrison hit Star Ship Pain on Ziggler.

Chris Jericho comes out to address the crowd.  “I am a victim in all of this.  I’ve been disrespected, lost my tag team partner since I’ve been shipped to Smackdown, and still we’re not the #1 contenders?  What has the Hart Dynasty done to deserve a title shot?”

• Hart Dynasty come out.  Jericho cuts them off and says, “I can remember you as children with mucous coming out your noses and dirt on your faces!”
• Harts say that, “we are better than the best!”
• DX then appears on the titan tron screen.  They peddle some merchandise, including a gag gift called the “Tickle Me Big Show,” that farted!
• Jericho cuts them off and turns to the Harts and says, “SEE!  That’s what DX is about, jokes!  Tonight, make and impact!”  Jericho turns his back to say one more thing to DX, but when he looks again at the Harts, he gets a Hart Attack for his trouble.

Backstage: Mickie James is approached by Layla & Michelle McCool who give her a Christmas card and apologize.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t sincere and they gave her a gift certificate to Jenny Craig.  Mickie looks like she’s about to cry!

Backstage: Josh Matthews catches up with Rey Mysterio who says, “I can’t take the Undertaker lightly.  Christmas is the time for miracles, maybe we’ll see one tonight!”

World Heavyweight Championship Match
Rey Mysterio vs. The Undertaker (Champion)
WINNER: The Undertaker via DQ when Batista came out and attacked him.

• After match, all three men did battle and Mysterio was the one left standing in the ring.

Backstage: Cryme Tyme find a guy in a Santa suit who says he’s sick of presents and doesn’t want to go out to the ring to hand them out.  Cryme Tyme jumps him and takes the bag of gifts to the ring.

Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard & JTG) vs. Bryce Andrews & Pat Buck
WINNERS: Cryme Time via pin fall after hitting some sort of double team Blockbuster.

Backstage: Vickie and Teddy are arguing about what happened earlier with Hornswoggle.  They “get back to the show” to talk about dessert and pies.  Both fake like they’re going to hit each other with one, but don’t.  Vickie turns back to the camera and Hornswoggle walks in again.  Teddy gets her attention and Hornswoggle hits her with a pie!  Teddy says something about never skipping dessert and Hornswoggle hits him with a pie too.  Then goes crazy on the bowl of egg nog!

WINNERS: Mickie & Maria via pin fall after Mickie hit Layla with a kick to the head.

• After match, Mickie goes right after Michelle McCool who was sitting at the announce desk, but is attacked from behind by Beth Phoenix.

Unified Tag Team Title Match
DX (Shawn Michaels & Triple H) vs. Hart Dynasty (Tyson Kidd & DH Smith with Natalya)
WINNERS: DX via pin fall after DH Smith got hit with Sweet Chin Music followed up with a Pedigree.

• After match, Hornswoggle comes out from under the ring to give some Christmas hats to DX and to say Merry Christmas!

QUICK THOUGHTS:

Holiday backstage segments always end in food flying in someone’s face… we get it WWE!

You can ask anyone I’ve talked to in the past week about the Rey Mysterio vs. Undertaker match up.  I figured that Batista would interfere in some way.  My guess is that they’re going to drag this out until the Royal Rumble and there’s going to be a triple threat match up for the World Title.

The segment with Chris Jericho, DX, and the Hart Dynasty was a little long winded for Smackdown standards, but I have to say that I was shocked with their match!  I really didn’t think that the Hart Dynasty would be up to the level of DX in their first Smackdown main event.  Those guys showed up tonight!  Most of their matches against Cryme Time or jobbers have been very lackluster.  Tonight, they and DX looked really great in the ring.  I’m hoping that with Bret Hart coming back to WWE, they continue to play up this rivalry and maybe have him be the edge that the Harts need to win the Unified Tag Titles.
