ECW on Syfy – 1/5/10

Last night, the ECW Homecoming Qualifying continued as CM Punk & Mark Henry did battle.  Who prevailed?  Well read on and find out:

The ECW Champion, Christian, comes to the ring and grabs a microphone to address his “peeps!”  He starts to talk about the ECW Homecoming when he’s interrupted by CM Punk along with Luke Gallows.

• Punk says that, “CM Punk being back on ECW is something you should get used to.  This homecoming is about coming back to win the ECW Championship, and that’s what I intend to do, to beat you…  To prove that straightedge means I’m better than you!”
• “Does the straightedge way mean that you also have to look like you haven’t taken a shower in two weeks?… Considering who’s qualified for the Homecoming… you’re going to come in here and get squashed by the “World Strongest Man!”

Video Package: How last week Zack Ryder beat Tommy Dreamer and ended his career.

Zack Ryder and Rosa Mendez come out to the entrance ramp.  Ryder addresses the crowd saying, “Tommy Dreamers gone; I destroyed the heart of ECW and now ECW is all about Zack Ryder!”

Backstage: Mark Henry is warming up in the locker room when he’s approached by Tony Atlas who asks if he could “maybe walk down to the ring with him like old times?”

• Mark Henry simply says, “NO” and leaves the room.

QUICK THOUGHTS:

I wonder if they have to write Christian’s jokes?  Sometimes it seems like he comes up with them right off the cuff, but I can’t help but wonder if the creative team puts things out there for him to say.  The comment to Punk tonight I found really funny because Punk is slowly starting to look like a homeless man.

You’ve ever heard the expression, the blind leading the blind, well that statement would usually describe matches between two guys that suck in the ring together, and most of the time that describes the matches between Kozlov and Jackson.  However, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile, and this match wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.  It’s just so funny to watch the “Unstoppable Russian” from a year ago turn into this crappy wrestler that WWE’s now portraying.

The ECW Homecoming Finale is next week.  The field is now set!  We have 8 men that will be competing in an Over The Top Rope Challenge (aka Battle Royal), where the winner will qualify to face Christian at the Royal Rumble for the ECW Title.  My brain is thinking that they’re going to give it to Benjamin just because it’s something they did last PPV and they know those two guys could put on another good match… Plus, that’s just WWE method of operation, ride a rivalry into the ground till we’re sick of it!
