Friday Night Smackdown! – 1/29/10

Last night was the last episode of Smackdown before the Royal Rumble.  Did anything crazy happen and who gained momentum going into this weekend?  Find out here:

DX comes to the ring for their tag team title match.  They look like they’re going to go on a rant to the crowd, when Rey Mysterio interrupts and comes to the ring.

• Mysterio calls out Shawn Michaels saying, “I respect you, but I don’t think you respect me.” Michaels expects The Undertaker to win so that WHEN he wins the Rumble he’ll get to face Taker at WrestleMania.
• Triple H says to Mysterio, “If you’re looking for a fight, sorry Hornswoggle isn’t here!”
• Both Rey and Shawn make threats towards each other and they’re interrupted by the Straightedge Society (CM Punk, Luke Gallows & Serena).
• Punk asks Rey if he’s high on some sort of drug because if he actually watched Smackdown he’d know the Straightedge Society is going to become the tag team champions.
• Trips cuts Punk off and says, “I don’t get the whole not drinking thing… these people really don’t give a crap!”
• Teddy Long comes out and cancels the tag team match, and makes two more matches – Rey vs. HBK and Punk vs. HHH.

Triple H vs. CM Punk with Gallows & Serena
WINNER: Triple H via DQ when Serena jumped in the ring and onto Triple H’s back.

• After match, the Straightedge Society jump Trips and it looks like they’re going to use the hair clippers on him when HBK saves the day.

Chris Jericho vs. R-Truth
WINNERS: R-Truth via jackknife roll up pin fall after countering Jericho’s Code Breaker by grabbing the ropes.

Matt Striker & Todd Grisham run down what happened last week when Rey Mysterio called out The Undertaker and then was attacked by Batista.

Backstage: Josh Matthews asks Batista if his strategy is going to change going into the Rumble?  Batista replies, “No, I put the spotlight on me and I made a statement.  I’m going to win the Rumble and go on to WrestleMania.

Intercontinental Title Match – No Disqualifications
John Morrison vs. Drew McIntyre (Champion)
WINNER: Drew McIntyre via pin fall after hitting the Future Shock (Double Arm DDT) on the IC Title.

Michelle McCool comes to the ring and says, “I’ve sent Piggy James back to the barn yard for good!  She shows a video of what happened last week when she hit Mickie James with a cake shaped like a pig.

• McCool then issues an open challenge to anyone in the back and is willing to put the Women’s Championship on the line.
• Mickie James’ music hits, but Layla comes out in a fat suit eating donuts.  They go through a ton of jokes about Mickie’s weight again and then have a mock match where McCool tires her out by running around the ring.

Matt Striker and Todd Grisham run down the card for the Royal Rumble (Preview/Predictions coming Sunday before the broadcast).

Backstage: Batista grabs Shawn Michaels walking down the hall way, “I don’t care about your obsession with Taker… stay out of my way at the Rumble.”

• HBK calls Batista overrated and it looks like a brawl is going to break out, but Triple H walks in and threatens Batista himself.

Shawn Michaels vs.  Rey Mysterio
WINNER: No Contest after Batista ran in on the match and attacked both Michaels and Mysterio.

• Triple H comes in and takes care of Batista.
• Lights out/on and The Undertaker is in the ring and hits both Michaels and Mysterio with a chokeslam.

QUICK THOUGHTS:

I’m a little upset that we didn’t get to see the Straightedge Society win the tag team gold!  I really think if they put the titles on them, they could get even more heat than they already do because of the fact that this proves they’re better than every other tag team in the WWE.  Soon enough, we’ll see it.  It’s also nice to see that the woman from last week’s pledging, Serena, is going to be a part of their faction.

R-Truth pulls out a huge upset over Chris Jericho, but I don’t know where they’re going to go with this whole deal.  Jericho and Truth are going to feud?  That would be a waste of Jericho… If the rumors are true and Edge comes back this weekend, then the short lived feud will end, and that’s the Truth… sorry, couldn’t help myself, too easy!

More name calling and teasing of Mickie James… Looking forward to seeing McCool getting an ass whoopin’ at the Rumble.

The No DQ match for the IC Title wasn’t bad.  I’m glad McIntyre won.  I just can’t help but think that this guy is the next coming of Randy Orton just with a funny Scottish accent.  He’s a great heel, and a big time worm who likes to cheat to keep his belt.

Again, main event was good, but another goddamn run in!  Seriously, let someone win or lose once in awhile!  I’m really getting sick of seeing matches end abruptly, especially main events.
