Smackdown! – 3/19/10

With WrestleMania’s shadow being cast on the WWE Universe, the superstars of Smackdown are getting ready for the biggest night of the year.  The rivalries are boiling over.  How would things shake down?  Find out here:

Video Package: Last week, CM Punk interrupts Rey Mysterio‘s birthday celebration in the ring for his daughter, then challenges Rey to a match at WrestleMania and tries to bait him into a match that night in front of his family.

Rey Mysterio comes to the ring, “I haven’t had a moment of peace for the last week… because of one person, CM Punk.  I’ve climbed a lot of mountains, but CM Punk crossed a line that should never be crossed…  yeah Punk I accept that match… but I want it to be a street fight.  I want to teach you a lesson, you never mess with a man’s family!”

• Punk and the Straightedge Society come to the ramp, “I can see your heart and it’s broken and filled with rage…”
• Rey replies, “You have to be human to know what I’m feeling… you’re a monster!”
• Punk puts it out there that if Rey lays a finger on him before WrestleMania there’s no match.  Punk then starts showing pictures of last weeks ordeal how Rey’s daughter went from happy and protected, to absolutely terrified.  He calls Rey a coward and offers to save him!
• Rey responds, “That will never happen Punk.  If you don’t accept the street fight at WrestleMania, you will end up fighting me every day for the rest of your life!”
• Punk cuts a deal.  If Rey beats Luke Gallows tonight, he’ll get his street fight at WrestleMania, but if he loses tonight no street fight.  Also, if he loses at WrestleMania, then he must join the SES on the grandest stage of them all!
• Rey says, “Tonight, I’m going to beat Luke Gallows, and make sure you NEVER forget the beating I give you at WrestleMania.  May God have mercy on your soul!”

MVP & Matt Hardy vs. Jack Swagger & Dolph Ziggler
WINNERS: Swagger & Ziggler via pin fall after Ziggler hit the Zig Zag on MVP

• After match, Ziggler put a ladder in the ring and climbed it to grab the prop Money in the Bank case.

Video Package: Clips from last week’s The Highlight Reel segment between Chris Jericho & Edge.

Backstage: Teddy Long is approached by Drew McIntyre.  Teddy tells him, “I’m impressed that you’re still technically undefeated… last week you qualified for the Money in the Bank against Vince McMahon‘s hand picked competitor who we saw for the first time, and will probably never see again… I was thinking about undefeated streaks, so tonight, you’ll go one on one against… The Undertaker.

Layla & Michelle McCool vs. Tiffany & Beth Phoenix
WINNERS: Tiffany and Beth Phoenix via pin fall after Beth hit the Glam Slam on McCool

• After match, Vickie Guerrero came down to ring and demanded an apology for last week’s attack by Beth Phoenix.
• Beth tries to apologize, but it’s not good enough so she makes a match for next week, Beth versus her..?

Edge comes to the ring for The Cutting Edge segment.  His guest is Chris Jericho and his NXT Rookie Wade Barrett.

• Edge says to Jericho, “Last week, you hit me with that title and this week on RAW I got you back!”
• Jericho laughs it off, “You’re making a big mistake by boiling things down to one move.  It’s about more than a spear!”  Jericho runs down other factor, but focuses on how Edge is still injured and how he can possibly end his career.
• Edge says, “There is only one way to find out… Make your move Chris, do it right now!”  Jericho hesitates, so Edge pops him.  He starts to beat up on both Jericho and Barrett, hitting the rookie with a Spear.  Jericho sneaks up behind him and hits a Code Breaker.

Hart Dynasty (DH Smith & Tyson Kidd with Natalya) vs. R-Truth & John Morrison
WINNERS: Truth & Morrison via pin after Truth hit the Lie Detector on Kidd

Backstage: Cryme Tyme has a Word Up segment.

Rey Mysterio vs. Luke Gallows with CM Punk & Serena
WINNER: Gallows via pin fall after Serena interferes while Punk is distracting the referee.

Non-Title Match
The Undertaker vs. Drew McIntyre
WINNER: The Undertaker via pin fall after hitting the Tombstone

• After match, Shawn Michaels came out and hit Taker with Sweet Chin Music.

QUICK THOUGHTS:

The Rey/Punk storyline is very hard hitting because it involves a man’s family.  In the grand scheme of things, could it really be possible that Rey joins the Straightedge Society..?  Nah…

More hype for Jericho and Edge without a damn match between them.  Nice to see the WWE getting Barrett involved on Smackdown a bit.  Didn’t really have to do much, but it just shows who the WWE wants to push out of the rookies.

I figured HBK would do something to Taker tonight.  Just got that feeling when he was walking back up that ramp.
