Smackdown – 7/2/10
Since we found out what the Smackdown main event would be at Money in the Bank, who would actually competing in the PPV’s namesake for a chance at the World Champion? Some participants were named tonight. You want to find out who they were? Then read on:
Video Package: Last week, Kane looks to exact revenge on CM Punk who is believed to have attacked and put The Undertaker (Kane’s brother) out of commission.
Jack Swagger to the ring. “Last week, I told you I was going to make people suffer after I was cheated out of my championship… If I could make the World’s Largest Athlete suffer, then I can make anyone suffer…”
- Video Package: Footage from last week shown of Swagger putting Big Show in an ankle lock and refusing to let go.
- Swagger thinks that they should be talking more about him, and less about the Money in the Bank match. He brags about his past MITB win, and cries some more about being cheated out of the World Title and how no one even cares.
- Interrupted by Big Show who’s walking with a limp to the ramp. “You surprised me last week, and you hurt me, but you didn’t finish the job… I dare you, no I beg you, to try to put that ankle lock on me one more time!”
- After Swagger claims that he’s going to do the same thing to Rey Mysterio at Money in the Bank PPV, Show calls him delusional and Show threatens to break his jaw. Show begins walking to the ring and he’s jumped from behind by “Dashing” Cody Rhodes who takes out his leg. Swagger and Rhodes beat him down 2 on 1 till Mysterio runs down to clear the ring.
Matt Striker & Todd Grisham announce some of the participants in the Smackdown Money in the Bank match:
- Kane, Matt Hardy, Cody Rhodes, Christian, Kofi Kingston, Big Show (2 TBD)
Backstage: Dolph Ziggler on way to the ring when he’s stopped by Vickie Guerrero. She reminds him that if he wins tonight, he’ll get an Intercontinental Title shot. He says that he’s ready, but gets distracted by Rosa Mendes doing jumping jacks (who wouldn’t?!?). Vickie’s upset with him as they walk towards the ring.
Non-Title Match
Dolph Ziggler with Vickie Guerrero vs. Kofi Kingston
WINNER: Kingston via pin fall after hitting Trouble in Paradise
- Post match, Vickie walks out of the ringside area alone and pissed at Dolph.
Backstage: CM Punk (arm in a sling) is talking to Serena & Luke Gallows. Punk says that the whole situation with Kane is under control, but Serena thinks otherwise and thinks they should come clean. Punk says that Luke will take care of Kane, but Serena threatens that “if you don’t, I will!”
Christian is in the ring for his Peep Show segment with a ton of ladders filling up the ring and the ringside area. Christian’s guest is Matt Hardy. They talk a little bit about Matt’s issues over the past month or so with Drew McIntyre, but the topic turns to the Money in the Bank where both of them believe that they’ll prevail at the PPV. They both admit that they’ve made their careers off ladder matches, but the World Title has eluded them.
- Christian at the tail end of the segment, tries to punch Hardy, but Matt beats him to it and then throws Christian into a ladder.
Backstage: “Dashing” Cody Rhodes is brushing his eyebrows and basically conducts an interview with himself standing in front of a mirror. He brags about taking out the Big Show earlier in the night.
Kane vs. Luke Gallows with CM Punk
Kane via DQ as CM Punk and additional masked member of Straightedge Society attacked the “Big Red Monster”
- Kane turns it around and eventually throttles Punk. Serena comes running out telling Kane not to hurt Punk because he didn’t take out The Undertaker, but he was saving her.
- Video Package: Serena gets drunk with some guy at a bar on the day in question, and Punk comes in and reprimands her for it (no audio – surveillance video).
- Kane releases his grip on Punk and walks out. Punk is furious that Serena showed that video tape.
Video Package: MVP and Kofi Kingston are out at an autograph signing for kids at a toy store where new WWE action figures are being sold.
Chavo Guerrero comes out to the ramp for his match with MVP, and cuts a promo about how he deserves and is going to earn a Intercontinental Title shot tonight when he beats MVP showing Vickie and her “Gringo Boyfriend” how it’s done.
Chavo Guerrero vs. MVP
WINNER: MVP via pin fall after hitting the Play of the Day
Video Package: WWE Classics – 7/4/93 – Yokozuna has a body slam challenge on the USS Intrepid and the challenge is met by Lex Luger.
Kelly Kelly with Tiffany vs. Michelle McCool with Layla
WINNER: Kelly via pin fall roll up
- Before match, McCool attacked Tiffany for no reason.
Video Package: New promo for WWE’s newest superstar Alberto Del Rio where he talks about inspiration and never showing an ounce of fear to accomplish things that are impossible.
Rey Mysterio comes to the ring and says, “It feels great to be World Champion again… I am ready. It’s taken me my entire career to get to the top, and I’m not going to let one superstar, Jack Swagger, take that away from me!”
Rey Mysterio & Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes & Jack Swagger
WINNERS: Mysterio/Show via DQ as Swagger refused to break a 5-count while holding the Ankle Lock on Mysterio
- Post match, Swagger cranks on Rey’s ankle for a few more minutes before Show got back into the ring. Swagger and Rhodes run for the hills.
QUICK THOUGHTS:
This is going to sound random as hell, but seeing the World Title on Rey Mysterio reminds me of a little boy who tries on their dad’s suit and tie to be just like him. The belt just looks so out of place on Rey and the center plate of the belt looked like it was twice the size of Mysterio’s head!
I’m wondering if the reason why Punk’s pissed at Serena is because in the bar scene video package, we see Punk without his mask. We cannot see his bald head totally because he’s wearing a cap, but it’s my hunch as to why he was trying to hide the truth. I have no idea who Kane is going to be going after now.
The matches essentially sucked, which is sad for Smackdown, but this night was mainly about pushing story line through for Money in the Bank. They left off two names because it’s still in question whether Drew McIntyre will be back in time because of issues with his work visa.
