WWE Smackdown – 7/16/10
On the last edition of Smackdown before the Money in the Bank PPV, who would gain some sort of momentum going into the big night? Also, would Kane believe the story of Jack Swagger when it comes to his brother’s attack? Find out right here:
Video Package: Last week, the Big Show vows to make Jack Swagger suffer for trying to injure his ankle. In their match, Swagger hits and runs when it comes to Show’s leg.
- After the match, he’s grabbed by Kane who thinks that Swagger was the one who attacked The Undertaker. Swagger says that he’s got an alibi, and Kane gives him one week to prove things.
Non-Title Match
Kofi Kingston vs. Cody Rhodes
WINNER: No contest as Kane came down and destroyed both men
- Post match, Kane takes mic with some breaking news, “There will be a bludgeoning tonight… Swagger will pay for his sins…”
Video Package: Jack Swagger injures Rey Mysterio with an Ankle Lock two weeks ago, and last week attacks him in the trainers room, re-injuring his ankle.
Backstage: Trainer looking at Rey’s injured ankle, and has a brace put on him. Josh Matthews jumps into the room and asks Rey how he’s feeling going into Sunday..? Rey responds that he’s injured pretty bad and it hurts to walk that tonight he’s going to have to forfeit the title to Jack Swagger.
- Josh is in disbelief, and Mysterio was just pulling our leg. He’s more determined now to win than ever.
Backstage: Jack Swagger watching Rey’s interview while on the phone with someone. He’s telling them to get there as soon as possible because he wants to put this issue with Kane to rest.
Video Package: Edge wins and successfully cashes in the first ever Money in the Bank case.
Drew McIntyre vs. Christian
WINNER: McIntyre via pin fall after hitting the Future Shock DDT
Video Package: Promo for new wrestler, Alberto Del Rio.
Video Package: CM Punk‘s MITB victory and cashing in against Jeff Hardy.
The Straightedge Society in the ring. CM Punk speaks about how he’s won two Money in the Bank matches and he would win his third, had his arm not been injured…
- Interrupted by the Big Show who comes out with two different sized ladders. Show says he interrupted because Punk’s putting people to sleep. Show wants to talk about Money in the Bank, so Punk and the SES sit ringside for Show’s promo.
- Show shows to the crowd that a normal ladder cannot hold him, so he had something custom built, two ladders fused together on either side that holds up to 2,000 lbs.
- Punk makes a King Kong joke at the Big Show’s expense and the SES jumps him from behind. Punk takes the time to prove to the crowd that he could climb the ladder with one hand, when Show fights back and knocks the other SES members out of the ring. Show climbs the ladder and grabs Punk. In one motion, he pulls Punk’s mask off, showing his bald head to the entire world! Punk’s ashamed. Show’s smiling.
Backstage: Jack Swagger on phone again calling whoever is on their way to the building. They’re lost trying to find the arena.
Layla & Trent Barreta with Caylen Croft vs. Chris Masters & Kelly Kelly with Tiffany
WINNERS: Masters/Kelly via pin fall after Kelly hit the K2 on a distracted Layla
- Mid match, Rosa Mendes came out to the ring, jumping rope in an attempt to show Layla that she’s getting fit and wants to partner with her and Michelle McCool. It distracts The Dude Busters, and Layla gets pissed. Kelly takes advantage of the distraction.
Matt Hardy on his way to the ring says that he feels comfortable on a ladder, and claims that when he wins the Money in the Bank, he’s going to cash it in on the World Champion that same night.
Video Package: Another promo from the new wrestler, Alberto Del Rio.
Matt Hardy vs. Dolph Ziggler with Vickie Guerrero
WINNER: Ziggler via pin fall after hitting the Zig Zag
- Mid match, Vickie climbs up on the apron, and Ziggler almost pushes Hardy into her. Hardy hesitates for a moment and gets hit with the Zig Zag.
Backstage: A limo arrives. Jack Swagger opens the door and out climbs a man with an envelope. Swagger hands the envelope to a production assistant and tells him to get it to the video truck.
Jack Swagger and the man head to the ring. Swagger talks about how easy it can be to lose sight of what’s important in life, and then introduces us to his daddy (the man). Swagger starts rolling video/pictures of what he and his father did on Memorial Day Weekend, the night in question when The Undertaker was attacked. Stuff like working out, running a 5k, and entering a chicken wing eating contest. Totally staged looking.
- Out walks Kane, not buying it. Swagger attacks Kane with the microphone and locks in an ankle lock. Kane struggles, but grabs the rope for dear life. Out runs/hobbles Rey Mysterio who jumps in the ring and hits Swagger with the 619.
- Mysterio runs for the back. Kane throttles both Swaggers. Jack breaks his grip, but not his daddy. Jack refuses to go back into the ring, and his daddy gets destroyed by a Choke Slam & a Tombstone from Kane.
QUICK THOUGHTS:
It wasn’t a bad episode of Smackdown this week. I’m not really going to complain about it. There wasn’t too much more than normal in the way of talking which is a good thing considering the PPV coming up. Still could’ve been some more matches, but they’re selling MITB and the Kane angle hard, so you know they’re going to be shoving that down our throats.
Have to say though that I was in disbelief at what they did with the Big Show’s promo. That ladder that was made was massive. I’d hate to get hit by a regular ladder let alone one that was custom made to hold Show.
We finally get to see Swagger’s daddy… Too funny that they actually brought someone in to play him because I really don’t think that was his dad. If it was, Swagger was adopted!
