WWE Smackdown – 7/30/10
Now that we know who is going to be facing the World Champion, Kane, at WWE’s SummerSlam, how would the next few weeks leading up to the PPV be when it comes down to Kane finding the attacker of his brother, The Undertaker? Here’s what went down this week on Smackdown:
Video Package: Kane wins the World Title at Money in the Bank, but is still focused on who put his brother out of action and getting revenge.
- Rey Mysterio defeats Jack Swagger to become the #1 contender to Kane’s World Title.
Kane is in the ring with a casket. He speaks about how it’s been two months now since his brother, The Undertaker, was attacked. To his surprise, the other day Taker opened his eyes and said two words to Kane while at his bedside. It was the name of his attacker… Rey Mysterio… Kane questions as to why Rey would do something like attack his brother, but it makes sense as Kane recounts the days leading up to the attack and how Rey benefited from Taker being out of the picture at Fatal 4 Way when Rey won the World Title. Kane then says, “This time, victory will not satisfy my appetite for vengeance… I’m going to open this casket and then stuff you in… Then, I’ll shut this lid, and Rey Mysterio as we know him will cease to exist…”
Christian vs. Drew McIntyre
WINNER: Christian via small package pin after countering the Future Shock DDT
Video Package: Skin care tips with “Dashing” Cody Rhodes.
Backstage: Josh Matthews talks about Smackdown coming to the San Jose Area (probably only aired in my region). He then interviews Rey Mysterio asking about Kane’s accusation. Rey doesn’t answer the question and says that he’s focused on Jack Swagger tonight in their No DQ match.
Backstage: CM Punk is pissed off with the Straightedge Society. He’s upset that everyone has let him down lately and blames them for all of his problems. He tells them “without him, none of them will survive out there… all of you are nothing, so do something because if you don’t, all of you can pack your bags!”
Big Show vs. Luke Gallows with CM Punk, Serena & Joey Mercury
WINNER: Show via DQ after the SES attacked him
- Post match, the SES attack Show and target his hand. Gallows/Mercury hold him down while Punk and Serena stomp Show’s hand on the steel steps.
Non-Title Match
Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler with Vickie Guerrero
WINNER: Ziggler via DQ after Kingston refused to rope break
- Mid match, Vickie slapped Kofi in the face and he snapped.
- Post match, Kofi attacked Dolph all around the ring until ref’s stepped in to restrain him.
Backstage: Josh Matthews is with Jack Swagger who’s hell bent on breaking Rey Mysterio’s legs and then after their No DQ match, throwing Rey into the Gulf of Mexico.
The competitors come out for their Women’s Title Match (Layla vs. Tiffany), but Vickie Guerrero comes out and changes the match. Since Layla & Michelle McCool are BFFs that share everything, McCool will have to defend the title tonight.
Women’s Title Match
Tiffany with Kelly Kelly vs. Michelle McCool with Layla (Champion)
WINNER: McCool via pin fall after hitting the Faith Breaker
- Post match, Teddy Long appears on the TitanTron and tells LayCool that they need to decide who’s going to actually wear the title or else he will.
Video Package: A promo for the new wrestler, Alberto Del Rio.
No DQ Match
Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger
WINNER: No Contest
- Fight goes from the ring, through the arena, to the concourse, and eventually outside the stadium where the two competitors fight right next to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Swagger looks to be in control when Rey catches Swagger with a hurricanrana and launches Swagger into the water.
- As Rey can take a breath, he’s goozled by Kane who then throws him into the Gulf.
QUICK THOUGHTS:
Another great opening promo from Kane. I really get into how they create the ambiance with the lighting for the promo. Kane is serious about finding his brother’s attacker and now that he knows, he’s going to do anything to destroy Rey Mysterio.
I was shocked to see Kofi Kingston snap. The last time we saw him like this was when he feuded with Randy Orton. We’ll see where this takes us leading up to SummerSlam.
Thank God that they’re going to do something about LayCool both having title belts. I can’t stand these two together, and maybe Teddy’s ultimatum to them will be the wedge that drives them apart.
How many weeks is it now since we first saw Alberto Del Rio’s original promo..? Debut already! I just hope that after all this hype he doesn’t end up like Kizarny.
