Sami Zayn Should Be the Face of WWE Raw’s Cruiserweight Divison
By Juan Herrera
With the cruiserweight division set to return to Monday Night Raw, Sami Zayn deserves to be the face of the division.
The cruiserweight division is making a return to the WWE and it could not have come at a better time. With the recent success of WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic, there is so much potential for the company to do something great with the cruiserweight division.
The last official match of the cruiserweight division came in 2007, in a match where Hornswoggle successfully defended the belt against Jamie Noble. The WWE Cruiserweight Championship was officially retired about six months later on March 3, 2008, after the company removed the championship from the active championship web page.
Former WWE superstar Hornswoggle is the last person to hold the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Yes, Hornswoggle, the kayfabe illegitimate son of Vince McMahon and the former anonymous Raw general manager, has his name next to the likes of Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman and Tajiri on the list of former WWE cruiserweight champions.
With that said, it is time for the WWE to crown a new cruiserweight champion and there is no one on the main roster as deserving as Sami Zayn. The former NXT Champion is one of the most talented wrestlers in the company and yet, he is severely underused.

Zayn is a hard worker who can put on a solid match with anyone. Whenever Zayn is paired up with a talented wrestler, he shines brightly. His recent feud with Kevin Owens is an example of how entertaining Zayn can be. That feud gave us one of the best matches of the year at Battleground.

Since his match at Battleground, Zayn has made limited appearances on television. He lost to Seth Rollins on August 1st and defeated Sheamus two weeks later on Raw.
Zayn should have received a push after beating Owens at Battleground, but this has not been the case. The former NXT Champion is not booked to have a match at SummerSlam and he is not part of any current storyline.
Instead of capitalizing on Zayn’s momentum after Battleground, the WWE let it slip away. This issue can be fixed if Zayn is booked well once the cruiserweight division becomes a part of Raw.
Thanks to the success of the inaugural Cruiserweight Classic, the WWE is planning on signing several of the tournament’s top stars. Once the cruiserweight division gets going, there will be an abundance of strong contenders for the cruiserweight title.
Regardless of who the WWE signs, Zayn needs to be the face of the cruiserweight division. A strong run in the cruiserweight division can propel Zayn’s career to the next level. The former NXT Champion is not a top star now, but he has the potential to be really great.
