WWE Rumors: John Cena to Take Post-WrestleMania 33 Hiatus?

John Cena may be leaving WWE for another indefinite period after WrestleMania 33.

Since the fall of 2015, John Cena has missed months at a time on multiple occasions. He first missed two months with the filming of “American Grit”. Then Cena returned, only to injure his shoulder just days later, keeping him out from the beginning of January 2016 to the end of May.

Following SummerSlam, the Leader of the Cenation began stepping away for more outside media commitments, which had begun sparingly during the previous two years. He left for the three weeks between his loss to AJ Styles at SummerSlam, only to return as the build for No Mercy began. Then after that October pay-per-view, Cena departed again for Hollywood and didn’t come back until the end of December.

Well, the pattern is set to continue after WrestleMania 33. Dave Meltzer noted on the recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio that Cena will be taking another hiatus after the show.

Cena could be filming “The Pact” during this latest stint away from WWE. Variety confirmed this back in November. The movie, also starring Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz, is set to debut in theaters on April 20, 2018.

This also comes in light of the speculation that Cena and Nikki Bella will be facing the Miz and Maryse in a mixed tag match at WrestleMania 33. It’s a potential bout that may have every bit of “Total Divas” tie-ins you’ve wanted. With Maryse being inadvertently involved in Bella and Natalya’s Elimination Chamber spat, it seemed to plant the seeds for something. Cena also pinned Miz clean in the ring during the Elimination Chamber match.

The perception of Cena being a part-time star is going to stick as long as these Hollywood roles keep taking him away from WWE. He’s the latest Superstar to be showing up for just WrestleMania season and subsequently departing once it’s done — if this rumor is true. We’ll then have to track when Cena decides to return. Maybe it could be the recently-dubbed SmackDown-exclusive Money in the Bank PPV? The other option is SummerSlam, commonly thought of as WWE’s No. 2 show of the year.
