WWE: Analyzing the Paths to Wrestling Success

Is there really more than one way of finding a path to the WWE?

There has always been this adage that there is only one way to achieve your dream especially if you are a wrestling fan.  Fans nowadays feel that the only way to get to WWE is to scratch and claw through the independent scene.  The issue with that is that there is more than one way to reach the biggest stage.  This idea has lead to the criticism of wrestlers like John Cena and Roman Reigns.  To understand the concept, we as fans must look at in an everyday life aspect.

How this Applies to Normal Work

Every occupation has a journey to the top of the totem pole.  You can’t be a general manager at McDonald’s until you start by cleaning the bathrooms.  As an aspiring journalist, I think about this all the time and it applies to every occupational ladder.  For journalists, we understand that more than likely we are going to have to work for low wages to get our foot in the door.  Most journalists find themselves climbing a down escalator and the process is tough.  For those who are patient and work tenaciously without giving up, it usually pays dividends.  There are also those who give up and try a new career.

Inversely, look at the people who have a certain connection like Dewey Foley.  He was able to work for WWE as his first writing assistant job simply because he was related to Mick Foley.  We as fans can feel that we can create a better product with relevant experience and still not even have anyone glimpse at our application.  It is interesting that no one complains about how Dewey Foley got started in the business.

Don’t We All Wish We Had Certain Connections?

This is no different than the wrestling business because not all great athletes are cut out to wrestle.  That doesn’t mean that we should criticize anyone that doesn’t come from the indies.  As stated before, there are several different ways to achieve the level of success that you desire.

Should we as fans be upset that Roman Reigns has a connection in the business or John Cena simply had the right look?  No, we all would love to be that guy with every pun intended.  Think about your life’s dreams and how much easier it would be if you were in the right place at the right time.  Reigns and Cena just happen to be around when Vince McMahon was looking for his prototype.

Now, this is no indictment on all the hard work that is done on the indies.  I can’t help but respect a wrestler that has truly had to struggle to even get a tryout.  The Young Bucks travel all around the world and adapt to every style that they wrestle against.  Sami Zayn and Shinsuke Nakamura was by far the match of the year for 2017.  Bayley, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch all made their initial starts on the independent scene and it has made women’s wrestling as important as it’s ever been.

You Can’t Wrestle

There is a huge issue with “if you didn’t come from the indies, you can’t wrestle.” It’s that we often take away from their hard work by discrediting them because of their journeys.  Charlotte may not be as polished as the women mentioned above but no one can say that she isn’t talent.  She’s the top female heel in WWE and someone else who was just a cheerleader is right behind her in Alexa Bliss.  Whatever happened to wrestlers having different styles?  That is what made the Cruiserweight Classic feel serious as a wrestling tournament.

We all had a chance to watch the different styles play out in amazing matches.  Also, fans cannot say that Charlotte, Reigns, or Cena haven’t had a match of the year candidate in the past year.  The Miz made the Intercontinental Championship more important than Dean Ambrose ever has.  As fans, we take wrestling way too seriously and don’t really enjoy what we’re watching anymore.  The next time you sit down to watch a wrestling show pick a side and cheer for that wrestler.  I guarantee you that it is more enjoyable that way and it takes you away from feeling like you know everything.  How do you feel as a fan about someone’s path to the biggest stage?
