The upcoming Women’s Tournament is going to be released in a way WWE hasn’t put out brand-new programming before.

During WrestleMania 33 weekend, WWE officially announced its long-rumored Women’s Tournament. It will take place this summer, although few details were revealed about this — it will air on the WWE Network and feature 32 competitors. None of the 32 women have been confirmed for this event.

Steadily, more details are starting to trickle out. According to PW Insider, the tournament will be uploaded to the WWE Network all at once as Video on Demand. This was done with Holy Foley! and Camp WWE.

As for taping dates, those will be on Thursday, July 13 and Friday, July 14. The show is being filmed at Full Sail University.

WWE is putting “a number of talents are already undergoing background checks,” so it seems they have potentially focused in on who they want. There’s also going to be an “international” focus with the field of 32.

The Video on Demand aspect is reminiscent of what Netflix and Hulu do with television shows. While Vince McMahon and co. have dabbled in this with the previously-mentioned Network shows, they’ve never done this with a new, never-before-seen, in-ring wrestling program. While old episodes of RawSmackDown, NXT, Monday Nitro and other shows can be binged, they were all added years after being aired.

This is an interesting test for WWE programming. While they can’t do this with Raw and SmackDown, it may be a way of seeing if fresh Video on Demand wrestling sticks. If so, we may see this for future content on their streaming service.

As for the competitors, we’ll have to see what comes of this. However, it should be noted Stardom’s Kairi Hojo recently left this promotion. The Japanese star would fit this “international” look and feel WWE wants for its Women’s Tournament, so could she be part of it?
