WWE SmackDown Live Results: Highlights, Analysis, and Grades for May 16
By Grant Mannis
With the Backlash event looming on the horizon, the men and women of SmackDown Live prepare for another episode. Here is everything you need to know heading into tonight’s show:
Tonight marks a special occasion for Rusev, as he’s advertised to make his return to WWE programming. The former United States Champion has been absent for the past several months due to injury. He’s demanded a title shot at Money in the Bank, and the reason for his appearance tonight on SmackDown Live is to acquire that answer.
Five days before he’s set to defend the WWE Championship against Jinder Mahal, Randy Orton will be competing in singles action. His opponent tonight is none other than Baron Corbin, and the two seemed destined to produce a solid encounter.
This Sunday, Breezango will face The Usos for the SmackDown Live Tag Team Championship. Could the entertaining duo defy expectations and win the gold for the very first time?
Ahead of their six-women tag team match at Backlash, the Welcoming Committee will participate in a contract signing. Their opponents will be present as well, which is probably going to lead to a wild and chaotic brawl.
For the past several weeks, Dolph Ziggler and Shinsuke Nakamura have developed an interesting rivalry. With Nakamura making his in-ring debut this Sunday, could the Showoff be chosen as his opponent for the event?
In a battle of number one contenders, AJ Styles will face Jinder Mahal during tonight’s episode. Considering that both could benefit from a surge of momentum, their match is going to be rather important.
Recently, the New Day were drafted to the Blue Brand. They have yet to make an impact, but that could certainly change in the near future.
