Tommaso Ciampa Turns Heel at NXT TakeOver: Chicago, Destroys Johnny Gargano (Video)

Tommaso Ciampa just destroyed one of the best tag teams in NXT by turning on Johnny Gargano to close TakeOver: Chicago.

Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano had been one of the most exciting tag teams to come through WWE NXT in recent memory. Their matches at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II, Toronto and San Antonio were thrilling and put them on the map as a force in developmental. What they displayed in the ring was far from “developmental,” however. That became the case again on Saturday night.

To close TakeOver: Chicago, Ciampa and Gargano battled The Authors of Pain in a Ladder Match for the NXT Tag Team Championship. It was the long-awaited one-on-one rematch DIY had wanted for months, so they finally received it in the Windy City. They didn’t come out successful, though, but not without a historic fight to end the evening.

Well, this wasn’t technically the closing moment of the night. As Gargano and Ciampa reached the end of the stage, the latter threw his best friend into the stage piece, sending the Allstate Arena into shock.

A stunning turn of events after all these two did together since arriving to NXT in 2015. They tore the house down and became one of the top tag teams to go through Full Sail University. It all came crashing down, though, with a vicious attack from Ciampa, one that looked personal and will develop into a feud for the summer.

Ciampa and Gargano’s battle should have all the intensity and emotion involved, whenever it happens. The next advertised TakeOver is in Brooklyn, during SummerSlam weekend, so there’s about a three-month wait. Based on what we’ve seen between these two, though, it should be worth it.
