Brock Lesnar’s WWE Great Balls of Fire opponent was determined at Extreme Rules. It will be Samoa Joe.

For the past month, Brock Lesnar’s first Universal Championship defense has been advertised for WWE Great Balls of Fire, which is Raw’s exclusive pay-per-view for July. He won the belt at WrestleMania 33, defeating Goldberg.

At Extreme Rules, Lesnar’s opponent was set, after a fatal five-way match took place. It saw Finn Balor, Samoa Joe, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt battle for this opportunity. After a match that lasted around 30 minutes, Joe submitted Balor with the Coquina Clutch to become the new No. 1 contender.

Joe vs. Lesnar is a first-time-ever match for WWE programming. They’ve both been in the wrestling business for years, but have never collided before. However, they’re set to not only do that, but main event a WWE PPV, which should be a hard-hitting treat for those that are fans of these two Superstars.

Joe has yet to receive a World title match since joining the WWE main roster. He hasn’t competed for other belts yet, either. The Samoan Submission Machine has held a title in WWE before, though, being the first two-time winner of the NXT Championship in 2016. He did so by first defeating Balor, and then Shinsuke Nakamura.

As for Lesnar, he’s going through his first title reign since holding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from SummerSlam 2014 to WrestleMania 31. This saw things transpire like they did last time, with him missing TV time and making sporadic defenses.

Lesnar vs. Joe will headline WWE Great Balls of Fire, and should be a match that’s one of the highlights of the summer. More bouts will join this one, as this PPV continues developing its card for the next four to five weeks.
