WWE: Mae Young Classic Winner Should Be Crowned NXT Women’s Champion
The Mae Young Classic takings will take place this week, what should the winner receive?
If the Mae Young Classic is anything like the United Kingdom Championship Tournament or the Cruiserweight Classic we can expect two things. One, a collection of great matches. Two, a new championship. The main question with a new championship is that no one really knows where the winner for the Mae Young Classic will go or what they’ll even receive. That being said, there’s a fairly simple solution right in front of everyone. The winner of the Mae Young Classic should be crowned the new NXT Women’s Champion.
For months now people have been clamoring for Asuka to get the main roster call up she rightfully deserves. Coming off another successful title defense against Nikki Cross in a Last Women Standing match, Asuka has really cleaned out the women’s roster. With the NXT Women’s division needed somewhat of a reset, here’s what should happen. Much like Paige, Asuka should get called up to the main roster with the caveat being she must vacate the NXT Women’s Championship. The influx of talent WWE could add by signing some of the tournament competitors in addition to the established women on the roster already, the Women’s division would be filled with new blood and fresh match ups.
There’s an easy fix for Asuka’s arrival to main roster as well. On SmackDown Live, a 5-Way Elimination Match was announced for Battleground. The match will feature Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Tamina, Lana and Natalya. The winner of the match will become the Number One Contender for the SmackDown Live Women’s Championhip and face Naomi at SummerSlam. Enter Asuka.
There are two ways WWE could go about the arrival of the Empress of Tomorrow. They could either make it a 6-woman match and simply add her to the Battleground match late reply this month. Or, they could have her face off against Naomi at Battleground considering she is currently without an opponent. This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a main roster debut at Battleground. Last year, at the 2016 edition, we saw Bayley make her way to the Main Roster to team up with Sasha Banks against Charlotte and Dana Brooke.
All and all it’s a win win scenario. It would allow WWE to get the title off Asuka but keep her undefeated through her call up. On top of that, it would refresh the NXT Women’s division and WWE should absolutely take advantage of that situation. The NXT Women’s division already has top stars like Nikki Cross, Ember Moon and Ruby’s Riot. With women, that could be added to the roster after the tournament, like Kairi Sane (FKA Kairi Hojo), Toni Storm and Tessa Blanchard alongside the top stars of the current division, the future of NXT’s Women’s division will be just fine.
