WWE Raw: What Now for Enzo Amore?

With two dominating wins over Enzo Amore, Big Cass will now set his sights on a big future.  But what now for Amore?

We all know the story by now.  Throughout the month of May, Enzo Amore was getting repeatedly attacked by an unknown assailant(s).  Rumors swirled around the WWE Universe as to who was committing these acts of violence.  The Big Show was questioned, as was The Revival, but there was an underlying suspicion all around the company that the attack was someone very close to Enzo, his tag team partner of 5 years, Big Cass.

Throughout the duo’s tenure, their story always seemed to be the same.  Huge fan favorites with a ton of support from the WWE faithful, “The Realest Guys In The Room” seemed to always come ever so close to a tag team championship, only to come up just short.  The reason?  Well most people pointed the finger at Enzo and his in-ring ability, or lack thereof.  Cass, on the other hand, had potential star written all over him.  At 7 feet tall and 275 pounds with the agility of a man half his size, Cass was always destined for bigger things.

Everybody knew that at some point Cass was going to have to cut Enzo loose and that happened in a major way on the June 19th episode of RAW when it was revealed that Cass was the person administering the beatings on “The Certified G”.  At that point it looked pretty cut and dry.  Cass would go on to Great Balls of Fire, lay a beating on Enzo and move on with his pro wrestling life.

But then something funny happened.  On the July 3rd RAW, the “go-home” episode of the show before Great Balls of Fire, Enzo opened the broadcast by coming out and cutting a terrific promo about his former partner.  The speech was impassioned, genuine, and fired up the fans in Phoenix, Arizona that night.  Enzo followed that up with a backstage assault on the 7-footer that seemed to set up what suddenly didn’t seem so academic.  Enzo now had an edge, and there were many people (this writer included) that thought Enzo may walk out of the pay per view with a win, most likely by disqualification, setting up a rematch between the two best friends at Summerslam.

However, Great Balls of Fire came and went and Enzo came out of it looking just like the weak link that everybody already viewed him as.  He got a rematch on the July 25th RAW and it was just more of the same as Big Cass battered “Zo” senseless.  The beat down led to The Big Show getting involved and now it looks like Cass will move on to SummerSlam to face “The World’s Largest Athlete”.

But where does Enzo go from here?  Many times when the losing party of a feud resulting from a tag team breakup moves on, he can do it with his head held high.  Enzo may talk a big game, but after successive squashes from Cass, what everybody thought from the beginning was basically proven, leaving him with essentially no momentum moving forward.  Enzo currently does not have what it takes to hang with the singles competition on the main roster.  There’s a thought that maybe a run in the Cruiserweight division may be an option but if you try to match the skills of Enzo with the skills of the current champ, Neville, well there is a massive gap there.

So Enzo is basically left with two options that are the best for his future.  One, he could hang up the boots and turn to commentary or some type of on air role.  Come on, what if one day Smackdown or RAW is in need of a new General Manager?  I think Enzo would make a hilariously entertaining authority figure.  But at the end of the day, he’s only 30 years old and he’s a guy with outstanding charisma.  Think about it, was The Ultimate Warrior a great wrestler?  Or how about Roddy Piper?  Michael “P.S.” Hayes?  Nope, none of them had in-ring talent that screamed superstar.  But what they had was that “x-factor” that everyone talks about when they’re referring to transcendent-type talent.  Now, obviously Enzo is currently an extremely far cry from those 3 guys, but with some work, the company could unquestionably get something out of him.

The second option for Enzo is also the best and most reasonable one for him and his future.  It’s time for him to go back to NXT and hone his craft while being out of the spotlight and pressure that is the main roster.  He was a wildly popular character during his time there from 2012-2016 and he would undoubtedly be welcome back by NXT fans with open arms.  From there he could get the training and tutelage that he so desperately needs.  And who knows, maybe Enzo returns one day as a superstar.  The “Bona-Fide Stud” is a talented kid, but he’s going to need some fine-tuning if he wants to ever reach his potential.  NXT offers exactly that.
